Joining a trek in advance or finding a group in Huaraz

Is it possible to find a trekking or climbing group in Huaraz or is it necessary to book online? A little background: I will be in the area in early-mid May and would like to do a shorter trek such as Santa Cruz and an easier climb such as Pisco. I would prefer to join a larger group for the trekking portion.

I have been contacting quite a few agencies online and it seems like the going rate is $1500 for the trek and climb if I book now...is it possible to find something good (I have read some horror stories) for cheaper?

Do not use K2 Peru. I am in Huaraz at the moment trekking. I hired a mountain bike only to discover the front brake cable was tethered. I returned the bike and asked for a refund. The owner accused me of tethering the cable and refused to return any money. At least it was only money, could have been worse. There are Tourism Police in Huaraz - might be worth googling and see if you can call them. Good luck
