How far away???

Hi all,

I'm off to the Kani Lanka Resort in Kalutara in 8 weeks for a fortnight, hearing a lot of mixed feedback - good and bad! I want to go into Colombo for a couple of days and take my family to visit the elephant sanctuary, how far away are they, can we catch the bus, what method of transport would you recommend (there'll be 4 of us)?

All tips reference things to do and see greatly appreciated.

ThanQ!

Stevie

Hi Stevie,

Colombo is 80 km, and 90 mins by car. Pinawela is another 100, so altogether 3-4 hours by car.

Buses don't allow much luggage, trains do. For Kalutara-Colombo the train is well feasible. Pinawela as a day trip is better done by car as the last 10 km from the station (where not all express trains stop) would otherwise become complex.

All the best,

<Erik> & [Sandya]

Hi,

Yes the nearest railway station to Pinnawala is Rabukkana railway station. Most of the trains stops at Rabukkana. But from there to Pinnawala you have to take a bus.As Erik mentioned here big luggages are now allowed.

We stayed at the Kani Lanks in July 06 & had a trip to the Elephant place we got the beach boys ( Mark or Freddie ) to arrange this as saved us about £100.00 and they were great arranged an over night stay in another hotel which included evening meal & breakfast, aslo on route they stopped and showed us different sights they were really great & helpfull because of the road conditions it took about 4.5 hours to get there & as for Coloumbo it is about the same unless you travel in the middle of the night
