Cultural Triangle at the weekend

This has probably been asked a million times before but due to our planning we have been left with no other option but to see the sights around the Cultural Triangle on a Saturday and Sunday.

We've read that it is very busy at the weekends but just how busy can it be? If we to arrive at the main sights, Sigiriya & Dambulla, in the early morning are we likely to miss the worst of it?

Thanks for any light you can shed on this.

Thanks for the response Stephonymnda.

Will be staying in Sigiriya so the plan is to visit both the rock citadel and the cave temples at the start of each morning to beat the crowds.

We did the same thing when we were there in January. Wise idea to get there early not only avoid the tourist buses but also don't climb in the heat of the day. Remember to bring water & snacks with you @Sigiriya, as the only food stalls are at the bottom next to the tourist car park.

Correct, start climbing the rock early to avoid the heat and the crowd... this will be exhausting and tiring.

How early is "early"?

Have also read that "late in th day" is good, what time would anyone suggest?

One more question, and I know this will vary personally, but about how long should I allow to fully explore Dambulla Caves then maybe another day Sigiriya?

Help appreciated :-))

You should start the climb before 10 am or after 3 pm.

Dambulla will take at least a couple of hours.

Hi,

Is Sigiriya climb able in June? We are all in our 40s to 50s, and pretty sedentary. It sounds that even in the winter months, it is a pretty hard climb.
