8 days/7 nights South India

We, a family of 5 Australian adults ( 3 full-time Uni students) will fly from Sri Lanka to Thiruvananthapuran on the 17th of December 2012

Our thoughts of travel are:

Fly from Colombo to Thiruvananthapuran.

Drive to Kovalam

Kovalam - Nedumudy where we can board a houseboat - Allepey

Allepey - Kochi

Kochi - Munnar (stay in Munnar woods tree house) Not a must.

Munnar - Coonoor

Coonoor - Ooty by train ( Nilgiri Toy train

Ooty - Mysore

Mysore - Bangalore

As we have no idea if our request is reachable in only 8 days and 7 nights we ask for advise.

Can anyone recommend a good driver? or what is the best way to travel? We would prefer to stay in guesthouses or even homestays.

Above are only some of our travel ideas and we are flexible.

We want to experience as much as possible in a very short time.

(From Bangalore we fly to Kolkata and Varanasi) Any suggestions?

Thanks in advnce

What are your interests? What are you looking for from this holiday? How many nights do you really have, can you add a few nights? Have you already booked the flight to Trivandrum?

Hi Destination Expert,

thank you so much for getting back to me.

We have not booked our flight from Sri Lanka to Trivandrum yet and are flexible with the days. We have between 8-10 days in the South before we fly to Kolkata. Our interests are to experience real life and the culture and festivals of people in the places we want to visit. Visit main attraction of the various places. We love markets, nature, historical buildings and some temples. As we don't want to join an organised tour in order to be flexible we are looking for maybe to hire a driver and car. We would love to stay in Home-stays or guesthouses.

Hi Sam,

thanks so much for giving me some ideas of what is possible and not. I have looked at your suggestion of the itinerary and Wayanad looks impressive. I wish I'd have more time to visit all those beautiful places

I would suggest Cochin, Alleppey, Munnar and Madurai; it will make for a great exploration of South India.

Day 1 - Fly into Cochin

Day 2 - Cochin sightseeing and Kathakali performance

Day 3 - Go 1.5hrs to Alleppey and do a houseboat cruise. You can stay overnight iin the houseboat or return to Cochin.

Day 4 - Drive 4hrs to Munnar. Afternoon at leisure

Day 5 - Munnar sightseeing

Day 6 - Drive to Madurai. Afternoon visit the local bazaar

Day 7 - Visit the Meenakshi Temple and Thirumala Nayak;s Palace

Day 8 - Take the morning train to Chennai, and fly to Kolkata. Or spend a night in Chennai, do some sightseeing and fly the next day

I have not suggested a beach. If you want a beach, then you can drop Madurai.

Thanks Deepa,

That sounds good, thanks. Will look into that. I originally thought flying from Colombo to Trivandrum would be closer and then head North. I am looking into either hire a car and driver or maybe a personalised tour with a tour operator.

Have you heard of a company called Imazine tours?

Thanks in advance.

No I don't know Imazine but that doesn't mean anything; there are many companies and I don't know most.
