Ist class a/ c train tickets

We booked a tour round the golden triangle in july, part of which was overnight train travel between points in 1st class a/c. I knew this was not bookable until. 120 days before travel, which is mid feb 2013. Since i'd not heard anything about the tickets, i tried to contact the operator last week and after 2 reminders have just received an email to say the ticket is booked but no 1 a/c is available. Do the 1 a/c get booked fast and is there a wait list? Does this commonly happen with tour operators or have we just been very unlucky? I'm inclined to cancel tne booking with them as now have little faith they've arranged anything else either !

Not all the trains have the AC1.

On the golden triangle railway routes these trains are around the 20-30% of all the running trains.

And different class have a different amount of seat.

Just an example, train 19666 running from Jaipur to Agra, in general quota has:

- 8 seats in AC1

- 30 seats in AC2

- 106 seats in AC3

- 434 seats in sleeper class

wait list is very, very common on Indian trains. Ask the agent where you are in the list and/or consider also booking another class which you can cancel if the 1 a/c get issued

In a few trains , there is no 1st A/C class and also it can't be booked 120 days before... You travel date is July 2013 so there is no question arise about sold out or wait listed.

Most of trains who connects Delhi - Agra - Jaipur- Delhi come from long way so sometimes railway does not allow short distance quota so availability of seats will appear but you can't book these seats.

If we know train details & traveling dates then guide you better.

Why not try booking tickets yourself using Cleartrip? Once set up you can payonline using a UK card. So far I have about an 80% success rate. They are also prompt to return your money if a booking fails.

There is a sticky post at the top of this forum with details on how to get this set up from outside India. It does work - but you have to be patient, and it gets you in the mood to tackle India!

Even if you don't book your own trains, you can at least see what the options are in terms of seat types and availability.

Finally - don't get hung up on having 1st A/C - Indian trains are no where near the quality & comfort you would expect in Europe, so you may be disappointed paying the extra. Be realistic about India and you will find 2 tier A/C, 3 tier A/C, and A/c chair car are all fine. The regular downside of any A/C carriage is not being able to see out of the dirty windows! At least in Sleeper class (just bars across the window) you can actually see something!!

Rightly said in the posts above... Not all trains have the 1st Class compartments. Also some have reserved quotas which might not available to general public. But if you're planning to do only Golden Triangle, Shatabadi Express is the best train to commute. They have AC Chair compartments and serve meals during the journey.

the cost of 1st AC is as much as the cost of flight so if you want you can be booked on a flight, and yes there are very few seats on 1st Ac and out of those most are pre booked for ministers and the railway employees - that is y the railway have been running into huge losses
