Day trips from Delhi

My husband and I will be spending a week in New Delhi in October. Have already booked and paid for our room at Taj Mahal Hotel. Interested in a day trip to Agra to see the Taj Mahal, as well as a day trip to Jaipur to ride and paint elephants, but want to return to our hotel in New Delhi each night. Is this possible? Any recommendations for the best way to do it? Thanks!

The best way is to go to Agra by train/car...visit Taj Mahal and Fatehpur Sikri and drive to Jaipur on the same day.. ...overnight at Jaipur.....following day visit Jaipur and later on drive to Delhi.

Other way is to drive by car to Agra spend a night (highly suggested if possible)...visit Agra Fort and Baby Taj...following day visit Taj Mahal at dawn and Fatehpur Sikri on the way to Jaipur...overnight..next day Jaipur s/s and drive to Delhi.

Note; Taj Mahal is closed on Fridays.

Well it's quite possible doing a same day tour to two of the cities Agra and Jaipur. Its well connected by road and Train.

Agra By Road : Take a express way to Agra it takes about 3 hrs. So you easily see Taj Mahal and Agra fort and have time for shopping.

By Train : Shatabdi Express Departure Delhi 6 am Arrival Agra 8.05 am.

Departure Agra 8.45 pm Arrival Delhi 11 pm.

Jaipur By Road : It takes about 6 hours to Jaipur as highway is under renovation. So for same day its recommended to go by train.

Jaipur By Train : Shatabdi Express Departure Delhi 6 am Arrival Jaipur 10.40 am

Departure Jaipur 5.50 pm Arrival Delhi 10.40 pm.

Happy Travelling....

A return day trip to Agra is easily done, but back and fore to Jaipur including some time doing an elephant experience is very prob too much in one day, I would suggest you spend one night in Jaipur too. Or as Rashid suggested you visit the Taj and then go straight onto Jaipur for one night, have the elephant experience the next day before returning to Delhi. Andrea

From Delhi you can do day excursion to Taj Mahal by car or train both will suite you as your hotel is not very far from New Delhi station.

Jaipur day trip is not suggestible by train or car , if train or car then you should go for overnight.

The only best way to do Jaipur in same day by flight or one way flight & return by evening train.

Early flight booking recommended to get better price.

Dear CarsonsMommy, Namaste

we would recommed a Golden Triangle Tour: Delhi to Agra to Jaipur to Delhi.

This is more comfortable and cheaper than returning to Delhi each day.

You will also have enough time to see all attractions on the way and can have an elephant ride.

A 4 day trip (3 nights) will start about 11.000 Rupee per person (hotel, car and driver included)

With warm regards Anita and Bangali

It is easy to do a day trip to Agra by car or by train ( except Friday ), but if you wish to enjoy the elephant ride at jaipur then a night is compulsory because you can enjoy the same only in a morning time.

As you can see, most people are telling you in different ways that your decision to book and pay for all nights in Delhi was a mistake.

I agree with that opinion.

I think you have two choices:

1) Cancel at least a couple of the nights in Delhi so that you can overnight in Jaipur

2) If that is not something you can afford, then drive really early to Jaipur, like 5 am, so that you can get around 5 hours for sightseeing before having to drive back.

There are flights between Delhi and Jaipur that you can consider. But the cost doesnt seem worth it.

Thank you everyone for your helpful suggestions! However, I have to disagree with the poster who said we made a mistake booking our hotel in advance, as it is being provided to us at no expense- clearly it was actually a wonderful decision!

We did so much sight seeing in Russia and London, that I would prefer a more relaxing and restful trip here, so I think we will visit the Taj Mahal and skip the elephant rides, unless we can find a way to do it in New Delhi. I've actually ridden an elephant years ago, and know we will be riding camels in Dubai, so we'll be fine if its not doable. Thank you again for your advice - TA has been so very helpful with our world travels thus far, and it is a joy to give back to others what we have learned!
