Breast feeding around New Delhi and India in general

Hello,

I will be traveling with my infant son (who will be about 9 months) in Dec. He is and will still be breast feeding. Is it appropriate to breast feed in public?

Hey Rebecca,

Indians have the utmost respect for mums, so most places will accommodate you. Breastfeeding in public is fine but you would have to cover up. I recommend you carry a shawl or something to drape over when you breast feed. Its fine to breastfeed as long as your boobs are not shown.

I hope you have a good trip in India.

All most cover your baby and your part of breast. Either if you are in public places then it's problems more but you can set in your car or face to wall side when you breast feeding.

Thanks

We are quite used to seeing rural women breast-feed children. But urban women usually don't, so it's a bit disconcerting to see it in a tourist in a city. You will get stared at, yes, it's like the circus has come to town. However, the practice of breastfeeding itself is looked upon very positively and you will receive social support no matter where you are, especially from other women around you. For example on a train ride, if you don't have a shawl, another woman will actually lend you hers, that's what I mean. Men also understand and respect maternal behaviour, although of course, there is the curiosity and titillation of the chance of exposed breasts. Bring a very voluminous shawl or buy an Indian dupatta scarf. Our sarees help us cover up quite easily.

Thank you all for your replies.

I want to add that feeding a baby in public is quite different than urinating or defecating in public; urine and feces can carry disease and be a public health hazard. Breast milk is nutritious and sustains life and actually helps maintain health.

It is very common in India. Sometimes we can see in the Tajmahal area also. You carry one scarf or any piece of cloth to cover baby during breast feeding.

No you're not just being politically incorrect.

You're being prudishly Victorian as well :) We're done with the British, ok? They left in 1947 :) :)
