Planning for a trip in October to Mumbai

Hi,

I am planning for a trip to Mumbai in mid-October. Here is the itinerary so far:

1. Land in Mumbai and go to Shirdi early morning next day

2. Stay in Shirdi for 1 night

3. Come back to Mumbai the next day and stay for 6 nights

We are 2 families travelling in a group and we have little kids with us.

Questions:

1. What is the best place/hotel to stay for a night considering we will go to Shirdi the next day?

2. What can we do considering we will land in the evening? Is there anything that can be covered for a few hours?

3. What is the best route and transportation mode for travelling?

4. We would want to visit other places as well outside of Mumbai. Is Lonavala or any other place worth visiting in October?

5. What are some good properties in Colaba or Marine Drive?

6. How is the weather in October? Is it required to carry any woolen clothes for places like Lonavala?

7. Can we go to Elephanta with kids?

Thanks,

Vipul

Questions:

1. What is the best place/hotel to stay for a night considering we will go to Shirdi the next day?

I guess you are coming by flight to Mumbai, if by bus or by train then please name the station (Dadar, CST, where?). At what time? At terminal 1 or terminal 2? Since you have to go to Shirdi the next day, better stay near airport only instead of going to South Mumbai. How will you go to Shirdi? Have you booked bus tickets or booked a taxi? If you are going by bus then you can opt to stay near its pick up point. So next day you don't have to waste time searching for the pickup point early in the morning with kids & bags. Bus/ taxi will go through highway near Mulund/Thane towards Nashik passing via Bhiwandi,Igatpuri etc.

2. What can we do considering we will land in the evening? Is there anything that can be covered for a few hours?

It depends on what time you are landing in Mumbai. Also on the distance (between your place of landing in Mumbai

to your hotel near next day's pick up point for shirdi)

3. What is the best route and transportation mode for travelling?

Auto rikshas & taxis. Riksha don't go beyond Sion in central suburbs & beyond Bandra in western suburbs. At that time u can use yellow & black taxis. OLA, Uber is another option. Since you are are travelling with kids, Mumbai local trains & BEST buses are not suggested.

4. We would want to visit other places as well outside of Mumbai. Is Lonavala or any other place worth visiting in October?

Yes. You can visit Lonavala in October. In fact you can go to Mahabaleshwar, Panchgini as well for a couple of nights. On the way back to Mumbai, you can visit Adlabs Imagica also. It has adventure rides, theme attractions, live events etc. for children. You can spend a day at this place. If not visiting Adlabs Imagica then you can visit Essel world or water Kingdom which are at Bhayandar, Mumbai. Also there is KidZania at R City mall in Ghatkopar west (Mumbai), It's

indoor theme park for kids. You all can spend a day at this mall visiting kidzania, shopping at mall, eating at mall, watching a movie etc.

5. What are some good properties in Colaba or Marine Drive?

What's your budget please?

6. How is the weather in October? Is it required to carry any woolen clothes for places like Lonavala?

No woolen clothes required. It will be pleasant.

7. Can we go to Elephanta with kids?

Yes.

Hi,

This will be at Terminal 1. What is the best itinerary considering we will be returning from Shirdi? Mahabaleshwar and then Imagica? And then South Mumbai.

Budget is yet to be decided but we are thinking of 4-5k per day.

Ok. If you are going to Shirdi by bus then better stay near pickup place to avoid any inconvenience with kids & bags.

Mahabaleshwar for 2 or 3 nights. If you wish, add one night at Lonavala. On the way back Adlabs Imagica. Then one day for South Mumbai attractions. One day for Bandra- Bandstand, Joggers park then to Juhu beach, ISKCON temple, a ride in Mumbai metro 1(Versova to Ghatkopar) to see how city looks like from elevated metro.

If u don't stay for a day at Lonavala then you can visit Jivdaani temple at Virar East(little outskirts of Mumbai). Temple is on a hill, either climb the steps or go by ropeway. If you are visiting during Navratri time then temple will have some crowd. Then to some beaches in Virar West, then to Yazoo park(Google) in Virar West. For Virar you can go by Mumbai local trains. Virar is the last station in western railway suburbs. For lunch you can go to a temple of Jainism in Virar West, it's called Agashi tirth. They have a bhojanshala, you have to buy coupons, they serve veg food(chapati, veg, daal, rice, papad), food is freshly cooked. Take a train starting from Andheri to Virar to avoid over crowded trains.

Then there is a peace Pagoda(Google) near Essel world & Water kingdom in Bhayandar West.

These are suggested places. You can decide which all places you want to visit. But do keep at least 2 nights for Mahabaleshwar.

There are flights to Shirdi as well from Mumbai, though not on all days so you need to check.

Depending on what mode of transport you are taking to go to Shirdi, decide on where to stay in Mumbai on your first night. You could even travel at night and reach early in the morning so you have the day free to visit Shirdi. Private hired car would be best since you are two families travelling together. One large Innova would be ideal if you don't have very old kids. On your return from there you could spend a day or two in Mahabaleshwar and Panchgani but it may be slightly hot during the daytime there. Nights will be cooler but no need for warm clothes as such. Matheran near Neral is another option but you need to travel by local train from Mumbai to Neral and then by toy train to the hill station or if you go by road then only till Dasturi Naka after which motor vehicles are not allowed.

Book hotels in all places using TripAdvisor, MakeMyTrip or other such websites/apps for better offers and good last minute deals.

Elephanta Caves is definitely possible with kids but do remember that you have to climb up a lot of stone steps to reach the caves on the top of the hill. The boat ride to the island is worth it for the kids even if they may not enjoy the caves as much as the boat ride. There are a lot of monkeys in the area so be careful with any food or drink in your hands when out there as they tend to snatch it away without any fear of humans.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,

Aadil.

5. Re: Planning for a trip in October to Mumbai

Thanks Aadil. Considering Mumbai is our main destination, wouldn't Mahabaleshwar be too far off. I believe it is further ahead of Pune. Shirdi to Mahabaleshwar and then back to Mumbai; wouldn't that be hectic?

Yes, it would be a bit hectic but I suggested that as you had mentioned that you wished to travel to some other places too. You could go to Lonavala and Khandala nearer to Mumbai and also Karla where there are some very beautiful Buddhist rock cut caves besides the ones at Bhaja and Bedsa all reachable from Karla or Lonavala. Karla near Lonavala has a nice MTDC guest house complex with individual cottages in a nice setting with their own restaurant as well. The Lohagad fort near Lonavala which is an easy climb up or even accessible by auto-rickshaw almost all the way to the top.

Hope this helps.

Aadil.

Hi,

Please suggest a good place to stay for the night near T1 Airport or perhaps 45 minutes-1 hour from the airport if we plan to go to Shirdi early morning next day. Also, what is a good itinerary if we are planning for mumbai-shirdi-lonavala-mumbai?

There are a lot of Oyo hotels in Andheri East. Best to stay here for the night.

For going to Shirdi on the very next day morning, better stay near bus pick up place or near highway which is going to Shirdi, as suggested in earlier reply. e.g. if pickup is from Chembur, stay in any hotels near Chembur, if pickup is from Mulund or Thane, select a hotel nearby. It's better that you tell us which will pickup place for going to Shirdi.

Instead of Lonavala, better go to Mahabaleshwar as it's definitely better than Lonavala for 2 nights stay.

Also while coming back from Shirdi, you can take a bus or a hire a vehicle (for your two families) & visit Salutary hill station which is close to Nashik. Or you can go to Devlali too from Nashik. But Saputara is better for boating, ropeway etc.
