Travelling to Kolkata with young kids

We plan to travel to Kolkata in mid January 2013 for 4 days, we would travel from

Ahmedabad to Kolkata as I have to attend a conference there. I am seeking advice as to what are places to see/do for family with young kids. We have 8 year and 2 year old kids so any activities/attractions which may suit our kids would do. I also need advice about best location to stay in City from where local travel would be easy. Do we need to hire taxi for day or public transport would be useful to move around? what is cost of taxi hire for sightseeing? Any reputed day tour companies you can recommend? Thank you

Science City, Nicco Park will be the highlighted places for kids. Other than those you can take them to zoo, Victoria Memorial and cruise on Hooghly river. You may choose any hotel around Central Kolkata [Chrome Hotel, Akash Ganga] or nearby. You can stay in Lansdowne areas also. There are Pan Asia, Mangalam, Gardenia, Samilton. AC taxis are available over phone, that would be ideal for reaching the places.

Many thanks Asishroy, Do you recommend any shopping areas we should visit especially ladies clothes (not shopping malls as we have lot of them in Ahmedabad too).As my accommodation costs would be paid by employer so we are looking at staying in 4-5 star property like may be Oberoi Grande or Taj Bengal or IRC Sonar but I don't know which one would be best for family stay and central location (ie more suited to family with young kids), would appreciate your advice, thanks

Get your shopping of ladies wear from Gariahat and Dakshinapan (2kms from Gariahat). You'll get all the variety of saree of all states of India in Dakshinapan.

All the mentioned hotels are top class. Oberoi Grand and The Park are centrally located.

Just back from Calcutta and the shopping at Gariahat was great for sarees. There is a long street full of stalls with the vendors sitting at ground level and you can sit on little stools while they show you the sarees. Really great for cottons. Also on the same street you can get leather purses and bags in the "Shantiniketan" style, and you can get small beaded necklaces etc. Don't forget to eat puchkas from one of the many puchkawalas :) and absolutely don't miss the frankies, you can get veg versions.

I stayed at both Oberoi and Taj and found both of them very good. Had a car and driver so location didn't really matter.

Regards

Nehru Children's Museum for dioramas on the Ramayan/Mahabharath. Shopping at "New Market" - just behind Oberoi Grand.
