Dress code for women

I will be visiting Kolkata for ten days in January and have been wondering if it is appropriate to wear skirts or dresses ( below the knee)? Any suggestions will be welcome. Thanks- Jules

You are welcome to wear long skirts below the knee. There is no specific dress code in the city

Think of it this way, there are no legal restrictions, no moral restrictions, but generally in India the less you wear, the more unwanted attention and stares you will draw. January will be a bit chilly anyway, so casual wear in the daytime, full sleeves and jeans in the night. If you are going to five star hotels or parties, then almost anything goes. One look at the local women after landing and you will get a fair idea. Kolkata is a very safe city. Enjoy your stay.

Hello Jules,

Below is the knee is fine and there is no "written" dress code. But it is always advisable to dress conservatively if you are walking down streets and localities which you are unsure of. Clubs etc. are more in tune with the times so those are OK. Always better to be safe than to be sorry for something unpleasant, even if that means an uncomfortable stare. Hope you have a nice stay.
