Dauphin Island?

Help... We are an extended family of 3 generations, thinking of heading to DI for Spring Break next year. We normally do a barrier island outside of Charleston, but as there is a new baby in the family, we are thinking of staying closer to NOLA.

Originally we had thought of Fairhope, but that didn't play to the heart of the beach lovers in the family. Had discussed Gulf Shores, but that didn't ring true with those who wanted a quieter island. Let me just say, we did Laguna Beach (right outside Panama City) two years ago, and hated it... it was too much.

Three kids, range in age from 9 months to 4 1/2. The adults love to Fish, Read, Sit on the Beach, Shop and Eat out. Is this our location? Thank you for your help!

Don't rule out ALL of Gulf Shores... Look at the Fort Morgan end...a penisula that extends from the heart of Gulf Shores.. Unlike DI it allows the opportunity to drive easily into town.. Otherwise DI is a good choice.

PS As former residents of Fairhope we love it...and there is a beach..admittedly it is on the Bay not the Gulf. We will spend a month there next August...on the beach!

I would suggest DI. No touristy items on island, but, great white sand beaches and fishing. Lots of space on beaches if you rent a beach house. Just far enough from anything you could want and what u need is avail on island. Perfect for families that actually like spending time together.

Dauphin Island is the perfect place for families. It is so unspoiled with lots of beach and fun. Very safe, no traffic lights and you can rent a house on the beach and play in your backyard. As a resident, I would suggest that someone shop at Wal-Mart before coming to the island. There is a general store but it could be a little expensive if it is your only source for supplies. It is rather laid back so not much to do in the evenings, but after a day at the beach you might just want to kick back and watch the sunset.
