Spring Break for Young Family

My wife, three young children and I are planning a week in Gulf Shores in mid-March. Since the weather will not permit swimming or hanging out on the beach constantly, we are looking for activities for young children (4-year-old twins and a 1-year-old). I'd like to take my 4-year-olds fishing a couple of days, but am also looking for other activities. We are an active family and aren't afraid of hiking or other outdoor fun!

You could go geocaching in the state park. There is a nice park in Gulf Shores called Kids park. The Pensacola Naval Air Station is home to the Blue Angels and the National Museum Of Naval Aviation. It is free. There are several forts in the area. The Dauphin Island Sea Lab and Estuarium is very nice and they have a touch tank with hammerhead sharks and various rays. The Pensacola Mess Hall has activities for children. There are dolphin tours around Perdido Bay. You could rent a boat. Get a condo with an indoor pool. There is an arcade on Beach Blvd. There is mini-golf. Rent a canoe or kayak at the state park or Down Under Dive Shop. Let them pick out some souvenirs at any of the many beach stores. Fly a kite on the beach. Hike the Hugh Branyon Trail or the Jeff Friend Trail. Take them to the Hang Out or Lulu's. You can have a drink or two or three and they can play with no worries and lots of other children. Take them to Blakely State Park and tour the Appalachee River and Mobile/Tensaw delta. Also a Civil war battlefield there. Take them to Five Rivers Delta Resource Center. The state park has a small nature center too. Rent some bicycles. Take them to Scoops. See if Alligator Alley is opened for the season yet. Waterville and the Track may or may not be opened. Check their 2014 schedules.

Take them to the beautiful walking tails at Bon Secour Federal Wildlife Preserve which is about 9 miles down Fort Morgan road (turn left on Mobile Street).

You can also go further to the auto ferry next to Fort Morgan and take the ferry to explore Dauphin Island. From there you can visit and walk through the amazing Bellingrath Gardens (about 30 min from DI). There is also a mansion there to tour and a steamboat. Bellingrath should be beautiful in March.

Also, make sure to get a place with an indoor pool and hot tub. Most high-rise condos have them. Great to have that for the kids this time of year.
