Diwali This Year

Has anyone experienced this festival in Calangute?

Can we expect anything different while we are there?

Thanks in advance.

Its over the 12th & 13th Nov.... most events happen overnight with the burning of the idol.... If you are invited to join any Hindu families at their homes, you are expected to bring some presents, boxes of sweets will do.

On the down side some of the shacks run by the catholics (and I'm a catholic) try to cash in on getting presents by putting up some idols of the gods..... I could name a few offenders bur wont..

To experience Diwali better, you'll have to come to North India. Delhi / Agra / Rajasthan. You'll see the streets and markets lightened up with fire crackers.

In Calangute, you'll find some celebration happening at the Hindu temples, but not much elsewhere

Lots of noise and fire-crackers!

Must admit I was a bit dissappointed by Diwali in Calangute last year - there were some lanterns but nowhere near as many as you see in other parts of India. Having said that we went to the parade in the middle of the night in Calangute where a huge procession outside the temple took place where for want of a better description lots of huge mechanical demons were defeated by innocent child archers etc representing the triumph of good over evil. It was fabulous and the floats amazing. We also saw a small lantern competition in the temple in the centre of Calangute which was well worth a look - there were only about 10 but they were really beautiful.
