Day trip from Melaka?

Hello,

Just wondering if anyone can offer a suggestion as to where to go on our third and final day in Melaka? We hope to stay at the Majestic. We know that Melaka is quite small and that we would have seen everything in the two days prior so now we are looking to get out of Melaka for the day. We like rainforest walks, meeting the people, the food, cultural and historical relics, walks......most things really. However we are not interested in a crocodile farm (we're Australian!) and we don't have kids so we'll skip the theme park.

Looking forward to any suggestions. We are happy to travel an hour or so if need be.

Thank you very much

Since you like rainforest walks, you could head north along the coastal road to Tanjung Tuan. Formerly called Cape Rachado (broken cape) by the Portuguese, it is a small headland located in the vicinity of Port Dickson that juts out into the Straits of Malacca with a lighthouse at its peak. Curiously the land around it belongs to the neighbouring state of Negeri Sembilan, but the lighthouse itself is administered by Malacca.

The whole headland is a forest reserve. You cannot enter the lighthouse unless with prior appointment, but no problems entering the reserve itself. On a clear day, you can even see the island of sumatra in the distance. From the lighthouse there are nature trails leading down to the hidden beach below. The steps are fairly steep and you need to be reasonably fit. Bird-watchers usually come here to see the raptors (eagles) during early part of the year.

How lovely. Is it a long drive?

Hi Travelbug,

Cape Rachado is certainly off beaten path. It is about 1 hour from Melaka town. Unless you have a driver, getting a taxi there and back may be a problem. Majestic's conceirge may be able to help find a driver, just enquire.

On the other hand, Air Keroh's "recreational jungle" may satisfy your hiking need. It is popular with locals jogging and picnicking in the forest but it is not crowded or noisy. You can easily take taxi to Air Keroh which is the main road to Melaka town you would have passed by. The Melaka zoo is also located nearby that you may visit. It used to be the best in the country but I have not been there for a while, entrance is cheap, so you can just have a look.

Bukit Cina is a 500 years old chinese cemetery hill that is popular with local joggers. This is walking distance from Studhuys. There are joggiung trail and some interesting tombs to look at and they can date back to 200-300 years old.

On the other hand, if you want to earn about local culture and history, the historic center of Melaka is still the place. In china town, spend more time in Hereen Street and visit the art gallery and antique shops, they are all open to visitors, no charge. In Harmoney street, there are still some traditional trades that earn Melaka's Unesco because of the living heritage.

Across the river from Majestic, is the pretty Malay Village you can visit. Villa Sentosa is open to tourists without charge, you can chat with the people there.

Few must visit museums are the Ethnological museum, Baba Nyonya House, Cheng Ho Museum, Musuem of Enduring Beauty.

In fact, for those who love history, culture (although nothing in the scale of Bali) and heritage, you can easily spend 3 days in Malacca town at leisurely pace. Just avoid staying there from Monday to Tuesday as most tourist spots and restaurants are close.
