Good choice of hotel. Holiday inn is walking distance from the historical sites, food, nightlife. Chinese New Year is when Melaka gets lots of tourist and people going back home. So avoid the roads as there will be massive jam

Thanks Azmil, will all the shops be opened or do you think there will be some closures due to this event?

Mostly shops run by Chinese will definitely close for the CNY celebration. However for free admission tourist attractions like Stadhuys Square, Mosques, Temples (best time to visit Cheng Hoon Teng Temple), shopping centers & etc, it still will be opened...the museums will also be closed for 1st & 2nd day of CNY, also a day before, I think.

When Chinese close the shops for Chinese new yr, they don't close for 1-2 days. Shops will probably reopen on 6th or 8th day of Chinese new yr at the earliest. It will be very exciting up until the eve but unless you have friends to visit it will be quite boring from 1st day onwards. Not too sure but jonker street may be very quite for 1st few days of new yr.

It depends on what you're looking for. We sometimes go to KL for 2-3 days on CNY to get away from everything and get a piece of quietness. my mum went to HK during CNY then complains that only shopping centres are open.

Location wise, you'll need to cross "high way" from holiday inn to get to tourist places. I prefer hattens which is very close to places like St. Paul and you only cross normal roads. It's also connected to 2 shopping malls.

Hi Jaxyboyee,

It depends on which day the first 2-3 days of Chinese New Year fall on. Since CNY 2014 falls on weekend, Jonker Walk night market will be open as usual although not all stalls may be there.

Most shops in Jonker Walk will not be close for more than 1 or 2 days of CNY (malls will be open throughout but indiviual may be close for 2-3 days) . By the 3rd to 4th days, most places are open as usual. The places most affected by CNY are actually the shopping malls where some shops may be close up to 3-4 days.
