Mamanuca or Yasawa Island - Transfer from Nadi after 4pm?

We are travelling to New Zealand for our honeymoon in January and finishing our holiday with three nights in Fiji (flying in and out of Nadi). Our flight doesn't get us in to Nadi until 4pm - if we want to get to either Yasawa or Mamanuca island - are there options for transfers that late in the day? A lot I have been reading is advising me that the boats leave at 8:30 in the morning. SInce we only have three nights, we would prefer to get to the island as soon as we arrive if possible. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

There are no boats to the Mamanuca or Yasawa Islands run by either South Seas Cruises or Awesome Adventures which leave after about 3.30p.m. You will have to clear Customs and Immigration so you would not be able to leave the airport until about 5 p.m. The only alternatives are the water taxi or a helicopter and both are expensive.

The only option for any of the Mamanuca Islands & lower Yasawa Islands (up to Vomo) after 4pm is via water taxi - SeaFiji operate 24/7 but expensive for two (~ $680-00FJ) Look up www.seafiji.net I believe that water taxis will not go to Matamanoa Island after dark now. A helicopter would also be an option before it gets dark. FYI South Seas Cruises ferry run THREE times per day to the Mamanuca Islands - last one leaving at 3.15pm ex Port Denarau. The Yasawa Flyer leaves Port Denarau at 8.30am daily.

Have a look at the website for Navini. It is a small resort with great beaches, and crystal clear blue water. The resort offers 24/7 transportation to the island, so no need to overnight on the mainland on arrival or departure. You will be met by a staff member from the resort at the airport, and driven to Vuda Point where a boat will be waiting to take you to the resort. Takes about an hour. Another plus, all daily scheduled snorkeling and island tours are included in the price. Meals are communal, which we were concerned about. Prefer to dine alone with option of dining with others should we chose. That said, to our surprise we enjoyed getting together with the owners and other guests.

Recommend purchasing alcohol at the duty free shop at the airport in Nadi for having drinks in your bure. For other suggestions of what to take with you:

The following has pictures of our vacation to Navini. Will give you an idea of the bures, beach, resort grounds, etc.

Hope this helps.

Forgot to mention prices for Navini are in FD, so do the conversion to CD. It will be hot and humid in January. If budget allows, would stay in the two room bures which are stand alone, opposed to the duplexes. The ceiling fans, and screened/louvered windows allowed the ocean breeze in and made for a comfy nights sleep.

Meals were excellent. The best we have experienced in Fiji. Desserts were yummy especially enjoyed the homemade ice-cream. You can also have a private dinner on the beach in front of your bure.

Either Navini as suggested by E&C or a transfer by seaplane...

pacificislandair.com/Fiji-resort-island-tran…

email them to see what time they will fly up till (it should be daylight savings in Fiji in January so they'll be on the same time as NZ and will have light up to 8pm which means booking a flight at say 5pmish should be okay).

You might want to check out Paradise Cove resort for some great rates (they're going up in April but are still operating on their introductory rates until then - rates are in NZ dollars), they have air conditioning too, very worth while in January.

Not sure how long it takes to get from the airport to Denarau Marina, but you may be able to catch the 5:30PM Malolo Cat departure for Lomani. If interested, you may want to email Lomani Island Resort to see if they think you could make it (or others on the forum may be able to advise you on this).

Just a side note.. if you look at somewhere like Tokoriki Island Resort, you can get there via helicopter in about 15-20 minutes from Nadi Airport.

With 3 nights I wouldn't go out farther than the Mamanuca group, as you'll waste too much time in transfers.

Whilst it's a 30-40 minute flight from Nadi Airport to the top of the Yasawa chain (Yasawa Island Resort), the charter plane normally arrives there around 3pm, and departs at midday. I'd be thinking most other areas of Yasawas will be similar.

PIA normally don't fly late afternoon, but I'm happy to be wrong there.

Probably too late to help you out, but may be helpful to others looking for information. A great way to get to the Yasawas and Mamanucas, if you're looking for same day transfers, is with Turtle Airways. They will fly you out with a minimum of 2 passengers per booking, and usually offer the lowest rates in resort transfers to these two group of islands. They have flights departing every other hour almost.
