going crazy trying to pick a resort!!

hello

family of four with teen girls trying narrow choices down from going to the Yasawas and either staying at octopus -shorter boat ride/manta rays or blue lagoon -access to the caves or the matanucas and staying at mana, malolo or castaway.

looking to stay at resort for 2-3 nights.

looking for great snorkeling and a great fijian experience such as village and church visits!

thank you for any suggestions and all previous help!

I'd say Octopus if you only have 2 - 3 nights. For a "Fijian" experience, stay in one of their local-style bures, Premium Garden or Beachfront - friends have had 2 teenage girls in with them, not a lot of room but ok if you are only in there to sleep. And those 2 room types have covered verandah which gives you extra sitting room. Very good interaction with the staff and nearby village. They also have the advantage of their own boat for more flexibility than just relying on the Yasawa Flyer, theirs does 2 trips a day, 2nd one goes out there at 2pm, which I find easier to coordinate with other transfers or flight times.

Mamanucas - more touristy, some love it but not for me. Blue Lagoon is wonderful but if you only have a short stay then travel time takes up a lot of it.

Village/school and Sunday church visits are an amazing experience. Gives insight into the daily life of the Fijian people. Will be a real eye opener for your daughters. Will help them appreciate all they have, and know how lucky they are. The singing, smiles, and laughter of the children will melt your hearts.

It is not required, but take some school supplies: pens, pencils, rulers, books, erasers, pencil sharpeners, etc. Besides necessities, we like to take something fun for the children: jump ropes, frisbies, funky sunglasses. The post cards of where we live were a big hit. The kids really enjoyed seeing a different part of the world. Please do not take candy/sweets as diabetes is on the rise in Fiji, and dental care hard to come by especially on the outer islands. Better to take some toothbrushes.

The following link has other suggestions to take for a village/school, as well as other items to take with you.

I second Octopus, especially with only a few nights the transfers should work out better depending upon flights. My girls (9 and 12) loved it!

Fijian owned and managed Botaira Beach Resort would be perfect. A real Fijian experience, the resort was built mainly by people from Soso village on the island, the beachfront bures No's 1 to 7 are just that, spacious and only steps from the beautiful beach. Free use of kayaks, amazing coral reef is a marine sanctuary, great to snorkel.

In my experience Turtle Airways an expensive option for transfer, more than twice cost of Yasawa Flyer. If money no object, then it could be ok.

Did you also consider Paradise Cove Resort?

http://paradisecoveresort.com.fj/

Transfers available are the same as for Octopus (Octopus, Paradise and Blue Lagoon resorts are owned by the same company), they also are close enough to Manta Ray Passage to offer swimming with the rays if they're around. They fall into the price bracket that you mentioned (worth noting that they quote in NZ dollars so don't forget to convert to USD) and are showing availability for the dates you've mentioned. Lovely accommodation options for a family of four, basically brand new especially the bures across from the main beach which come complete with their own Bure Mamma's.

Worth a look.

Agree with the majority on this one with the Yasawas. Would not recommend Planatation Island. Its very run down and over crowded with Bures. Much nicer beaches, in fact much nicer in EVERY way at Mana, Mololo and Castaway if you do decide on the Mamanucas.
