That would be the fastest way now, about 2 hrs you can also get to Sarapiqui from La Fortuna area. If you want to see Poas, you need to backtrack to Alajuela.
Road from Vara Blanca to Puerto Viejo...totally close...and will for a few years...
You have to go to Poas...then back track...to San Jose and take 32...then to Sarapiqui
Thanks for the information. I would like to avoid San Jose on our way back from Poas. Is there a short cut to get to road 32 from Poas?
you can go through Heredia, much faster to go trough San Jose.
Agreed with Cubanon !
OK, so I am reading this and just want to update to be sure. I am traveling with the family (young kids 8 and 7), driving from LaPaz waterfalls to Arenal. Staying at two great properties, from what I can tell, Springs Resort in Arenal and sister property in LaPaz. When I saw on the web-site this information, I called the LaPaz property and was told that yes, I will be able to drive through San Miguel, saving 2 hours of drive time (I estimate 4 hours if having to backtrack as seen above.
Is this info just BS, or has it recently changed?
The owner of these sister properties has a vested interest is telling people that the route you are contemplating is not problematic . The government of Costa Rica seems to have a different opinion. Here is the Highway Department's road condition website: http://www.transito.go.cr/estadorutas/index which appears to contradict the information the hotel operator is providing.
I have friends who attempted this route in late December. These are expats who live here. They speak Spanish fluently and drive a sturdy 4x4 SUV. They made it, but said it was very, very slow going, with frequent delays for road work. Several times they were told to turn back, but they persisted out of curiosity and because they could see that the road was open for local traffic. It sounded like an ordeal and not a nice or scenic trip.
With small children, why would you risk your safety going on a dangerous road that is closed to thru traffic according to the local government?
If you look at the most recent tripadvisor review for Peace Lodge, the reviewer notes that they drove from Arenal to Peace Lodge and called the road "challenging." If you want more details, you can email that tripadvisor member directly and ask them questions about the road. To me, it was not worth the risk with my two children (and I didn't want to spend the time backtracking) so we decided not to stay at Peace Lodge.
I drive for living here in my country ...and I will never give any advice that can put people lives in risk...but of course if people like a challenge...nothing I can do...
You can even call the Department of Transportation and ask them about that section of the road...the answer will be it is officially close...
Some greedy people open that section of the road...just beacuse they were loosing money...
In may case I do not trust any body that have cage animals or open a road...just to make money...that is my opinion and based on DOT reports.
In my case I love my kids or any body kids...no money is good for me to put people on a high risk...
Please drive back to Alajuela...that is the way...
