Part IV- Poas Volcano NP day trip
This was our last day in Costa Rica. We traveled from Tarcoles (near Carara NP) to our hotel in Alajuela by Morpho Van. The driver was punctual, professional and the van was a comfortable ride. We didn't need the air-conditioning as it was pleasant. We reached our hotel at 10 a.m and as planned, set out immediately for Poas Volcano NP with our guide from the hotel.
After a quick stop for lunch, we reached the park around noon. Although the park was crowded, the views of the crater were quite spectacular and worth the trip. This is very different from Arenal, where you are looking up at a mountain. Here you're looking down at the crater from a height. Every time the wind blew, the plumes of smoke parted so we could see the green surface water inside the crater. The park around the volcano has trails that are good for hiking and birding. We spent a couple of hours in the park and saw yellow thighed finches, silky flycatchers, flame colored tanagers, and a few hummingbirds including a white throated mountain gem. The trails are well-maintained, yet maintain the atmosphere of hiking in a forest.
We had a wonderful time in Costa Rica. The people we met were pleasant and helpful. We loved the food. The bird guides were excellent. Birding can be unpredictable, especially on such a short trip. We didn't expect much, but we were grateful that we were able to see such a rich variety of birds and wildlife. And of course, thanks to TA for another wonderful vacation!
