Family of four with two teenagers will be spending 4 nights at the Riu Guanacaste. Does anyone have any good day tours or half day tours to recommend that do not require over an hour and a half of driving time? We will be coming from the Arenol area.Thanks.

Honestly not to many tours choices ...in or around one hour drive!

Maybe one of the few will be...monkey trail canopy tour...but a lot better canopy or zip lines in Arenal...

Just buckle up and enjoy the ride in PARADISE!

1) Do the Palo Verde River Tour. It is a half day experience with guides pointing out birds, monkeys, and water life. If the RIU tour desk cannot help you, try info@costaricawelcomecenters.com.

You will need to get the map to drive yourself (1 hour) from the RIU to Ortiz, a small town east of Filadelfia. It is where you meet the tour.

Tour $46/person, $56 with lunch.

2) You could also take the Monkey Trail Road to Potrero/Flamingo for a day trip of your own. Rent a mid-size 4WD car to be sure if there are rough spots. There is a zipline experience on the way, called the Congo Trail.

Once through the Monkey Trail Road, there are several beautiful beaches, ocean kayaking, sunset cruises, and great spots for lunch or dinner. You can take smooth paved roads back to the RIU in an hour.

The Potrero office of the Welcome Center system can help you. Email maggie for help - maggie@costaricawelcomecenters.com

Have a great time!

Palo verde national park is definitely the best option for a half day tour, you will see wildlife in their natural behavior like no zoo can show you. Also the Canopy tour is very exciting by Tempisque River.Contact CostaRicaforEveryone.com this is the tour company we chose in papagayo and the service was great: drinks on the way, perfect english, very knowledgeable about the nature and costarican culture, is the best way to travel safe an confortable. I recomend this people to anyone.

I also travel with CostaRica for Everyone and I had a great experience. My hotel was not very good but the tours saved my vacation. We did Palo Verde and saw tons of birds, two different kinds of monkeys, iguanas and crocs everywhere, very nice and fun for our honeymoon. We learn a lot of this beautiful country with them. You can set it up to have private tour for a nice price...you will love it!!!! have fun...

I was at the Riu recently and honestly there are not a lot of activities that you can do in less than 2 hours drive. i really enjoyed the "Rincun de la vieja" tour it was amazing, a little bit of everything there, it definitly requieres an entire day. We also did the One day tour to Nicaragua and it was amazing. I cant wait to go back there.

Thanks for all the info. Another question please. We will be travelling from Arenol by car to the Riu Gaunacaste which I understand is about a five hour drive. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what would be a good activity on the way. We love hiking. Would it make sense for example to stop at Rincun de la vVeja on the way to the Riu? How is the Riu by the way? We are spending 3 nights near Arenol and then 4 at the Riu. Thanks again.
