Free or inexpensive

I'll be traveling to the Papagayo area in October and wondering what free or inexpensive things are there to do?

Good question...not many things around there for FREE...just be extra carefull of foreign realtors trying to give you a FREE lunch if you attend one of the ripp off selling seminars...be as far as you can from those predators!

Airfare $700

Hotel $50 a night (probably more, Papagayo aint cheap)

eating out $40 a day

Taxis or rental cars $100's

and you are worried about a $2 entrance fee somewhere?

Swim in the ocean

Pick fruit off of public trees

Catch a public bus and see what barrio it drops you off in.

Rent a machete and explore the jungles.

Visit National Parks: Rincon de la Vieja, Santa Rosa, Palo Verde.

Go to the town of Guatil and look at the pottery being made there in the authentic Chorotega style.

Visit Llanos del Cortes waterfall.

Most towns have a park, church & market (parque, iglesia, mercado) in the center of town. Buy an ice cream, sit on a bench in the park & watch the world go by. Visit the central market & try some food you've never had or some tropical fruit which is new or unusual.

Many towns have a municipal/public soccer field. Start a pick-up game of fútbol & you will make some new tico friends as well.

Find a group of school kids who may want to practice their English on you (or you practice your Spanish).

Those are all great ideas (minus the machete rental and random bus stop)

I could sit for hours people watching!

We can walk the beach for hours, look for wildlife, explore tide pools, meet and talk to locals and other travelers, watch the sunset, take a nap in a hammock, stroll through town while window shopping. Find the things that are real important to you and splurge on those, maybe a zipline, or river rafting trip,or sunset catamaran. Have a great trip!
