Why don't you forget about the RIU and stay in Tamarindo where there is good surf and several good surfing schools? The RIU has a lot of problems and is very isolated, especially for a single female.

Tamarindo has some excellent lodging and more than 60 restaurants to choose from plus surf and surf schools. For example: http://www.tamarindo.com/activities/surfing/

No worries about your safety as long as you use your street smarts and good common sense.

Tamarindo is not too far away from the RIU and the place to go for surfing.

Enjoy the RIU, it's a great hotel.

Tamarindo is actually about 1.5 hours from the RIU. Why would you isolate yourself at a resort when you can stay in Tamarindo, walk to surf shops and surfing and have a choice of all those restaurants? Tamarindo is definitely the place that young people need to visit.

Just do a bit of research, Rachel, and you will see what I mean.

I also think that you would like Tamarindo more than the Riu. Good surfing schools are within walking distance as opposed to a 1.5 hour drive each way from the Riu, and several other good surfing beaches are close by. Tamarindo is also close enough to conveniently access the usual other day excursions in Guanacaste such as Palo Verde and Rincon de la Vieja. However, if you are intent on the Riu, day excursions to Witch's Rock (the surf break, not the camp) would be available leaving from Playa del Coco by boat, but would be suitable only if you are an experienced surfer. Beginner schools would likely be by excursion to Tamarindo.
