3 month visit -help!

My small family is coming to CR January 2015 for a few months. We can't decide if we should stay in one location for the duration or split it up between several areas. We've stayed in Langosta and Flamingo each for a week. We are considering Tamarindo, Playa del Coco, Flamingo or Surfside but then I also wonder about Nosara or any other great area in between. We want a place that allows us to explore many more areas. But, we want to be able to attend Spanish school and have our daughter either attend school or daycare as she is 4. We don't want the area to be crazy busy and not so quiet that we won't meet other families! The rental rates are not cheap and we don't want to be disappointed. So any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

For the closest to "inland" activities, Playas del Coco or Playa Hermosa or Playa Ocotal. Playas del Coco has Spanish language schools and is big enough for shopping and a choice of restaurants. LOTS of condo rental available and private schools also. Playa Hermosa is about 10 minutes away and Playa Ocotal and 5 minutes away. From any of these, you can easily do day trips to three National Parks as well as other "adventures" and with a bit more travel (about 2.5 hours), you can visit the Miravalles Protected Area and the Tenorio National Park.

You probably want to plan on spending a few days here and there in another location and where that would be would depend on your interests. For instance, for "nature" and a beautiful, quiet area -- the Bijagua/Tenorio area. For adventure activities - the Arenal area. Of course, you could also plan on a few days in Nicaragua if that appeals to you.

Thanks for the tips! Definitely having a difficult time finding rentals for less then about $1200/mth. Do you think it would be wise to just book something for the first week or two and then try to find something while we are there? Thank you!

If you are looking for a "budget" rental, your best option would be to book a hotel or B&B for a few days and look around and ask around. Word of mouth is how most things are done and you will find the best deals this way. Plus.... you can actually look at the property and assess the neighborhood, etc. There are lots of condo rentals in Playas del Coco and I think you can find something in your price range.

January is the high season in CR so all places will have the highest rates of the year and most thing will probably be booked way ahead of time. I don't recommend booking part of your trip only just because you may have a hard time finding a place that fits your needs due to the limited availability and spend lots of time searching for a place instead of enjoying your vacation.

Have fun!

Maybe in Samara, brendad, but in Playas del Coco, there would still be rentals available, thanks to the overbuilding of condos just before the economy tanked.

I guess it depends on a personal preference: Wait and look around and get a "budget" option or book something now that will be more expensive. Some folks would like the security of having a booking already done and some folks would like the option of looking around to find a good deal.
