Arenal Activities, and the drive back to SJO

We have decided to stay at the Arenal Lodge. Do we need (in high season) to book any activities/tours before we get there? Some things that tend to sell out? Also, is it OK to use the hotel to book activities/tours, or will we pay an unnecessary premium? If you recommend we book direct through a tour agency, rather than the hotel, is there an agency you can suggest?

Also, is there a restaurant you would recommend we could stop at, on our way back from Arenal to SJO? Would prefer a place closer to SJO, and not too far out of the way. We are open minded regarding what kind of food, but like "local" places best.

Dear one ...

Nice questions...you really do not have to book anything in advance...maybe the Hot Springs...and also try to dealt directly with tour or service providers...some jokers around now days playing Travel Agent...juts looking to make commisions...and are not proffesionals at all...

Some kind of sodas at Pana Am Hwy close to the exit from San Ramon at the right hand side...typical food...local food! Good CASADOS!

We used AnywhereCostaRica to book some tours (as well as hotels and transfers) and we are extremely pleased with their services.
