location & fees for DIY arenal hiking and hanging bridges?

Hello,

We will be staying in La Fortuna next week for a few days. We want to experience the hanging bridges, hike around the Arenal Volcano, and swim in La Fortuna Waterfall but we do NOT want to hire a guide nor do we want to book a tour. 1) can that be done? 2) where do we need to drive to and park? 3) on our volcano hike, we would love to see some old lava! Any maps, websites, direction, would be GREATLY appreciated!

Thank you!

Yes, there is a parking near all of the listed attractions. They are not guarded so leave nothing in the car.

You really do not need a guide for any of your three spots. La Fortuna waterfall is an easy one. Park the car, pay the ticket and then there are too many steps to count going down. Be careful to swim away from where the waterfall is hitting the lake. Arenal Volcano NP has several trails, and the one you are talking about is clearly signed. The ranger station should have the trails map. Hanging bridges is another DIY spot. Walking slowly and quietly you will be able to spot at least the largest mammals and birds. If not, there will be other groups with guides so just look where they will be looking.

Hanging Bridges is located out the road toward Lake Arenal about 12 miles west of La Fortuna. Just after you apporach the lake there is a turnoff for Lost Iguana Resort, and Hanging Bridges is up the hill past the resort. Entry fee is $24/pp.

You do not need a guide except for the Arenal Hanging Bridges. Guides are AMAZING at spotting animals so if that is your goal, hire a guide. If you want just a nice hike, then you can do without one but the foliage is so thick and people who don't get one always come back disappointed that they didn't see much (when it's FULL of animals).
