guanacaste costa rica. AI or not?

Would it be cost effective just to get a room on a nice beach and find restaurants around the area or just do AI? Are there markets around the area? How are the prices at the restaurant and markets?

I am not to picky with food just as long as its accessible, decent quality and value.

Cesar, you can always travel cost-effectively without having to do an All-Inclusive. Whether or not you will be able to find restaurants and markets will really depend on upon which beach you plan on visiting. Some beaches are a little more developed than others. As for pricing, depending on the season of course, a middle range hotel room will run about $59-$99. Most hotels in this price range include a free breakfast, leaving you with only 2 meals per day to purchase. You can get away with about $7-$13 per meal if you don't want anything too fancy. Therefore, you might be looking at a total of about $80-$100 per day if you are travelling alone or $100-$130 if you are travelling with another person. The cheapest all-inclusive resorts that I have seen have been about $119 per person when travelling alone or $89 per person when travelling as a for two. Hope this helps!

It is a matter of how much people want to eat and drink, and if they travel with a large family or not.

Westin is a nice option , Hilton at Papagayo has good prices this time of the year, so does Barcelo Langosta.

But for me it is better to stay out of AI's, that way you can see more of Costa Rica. There are hotels that offer good rates with breakfast included. You can go around and try different options. Try Playas del Coco or Playa Hermosa.

ai by nature isolates you from the country, you could be anywhere once inside the walls. costa rica is one of the most affordable places to go. it takes a little extra research, but you can beat any ai price and actually experience the country. like roadadvisor says, rent a car and do it properly. i always rent a car in costa rica and after 8000km of driving i have seen more than many ticos!

We often find for a first visit to a county the AI route beats the prices elsewhere due to the individual costs of flights, hotels, food, drink and transportation.

Just because you are at an AI doesn't restrict you from travelling out every day if you choose, or relaxing without worrying about where you need to go for the next meal...

Then you can get a taste of the country and plan out a future trip that will be suited to your tastes and budget.

Whiteknight makes good points. However, if you want to stay out of the all-inclusive hotels and not spend too much, shop around there are some incredible deals available.

Here is one for a boutique hotel that includes meals that is good for another 4 days.

Here is another with a trip to Hacienda Guachipelin:
