Dengue Fever in Coco

There has been an outbreak of Dengue in Coco over the past three weeks. If you have severe flu like symptoms, raging fever, go to the clinic for a blood test. Rest is all you can do and lots of fluids but your platelets have to be monitored. Take it seriously!!

There is no vaccination against dengue. Yet. The only preventative is to avoid getting bit by mosquitoes.

Use a good repellent faithfully. It doesn't necessarily have to be Deet - use what works for you.

There are also a couple of other things you can do: burn mosquito coils just outside your room which will keep mosquitoes away. Inside your room, you can buy a little electric "gizmo" that looks like one of those plug-in air fresheners except it has a cardboard insert with mosquito repellent. It really works.

Each of these can be readily bought at any supermarket, including all the supermarkets in Playas del Coco.

And yes - good advice from Heather M. If you have flu symptoms, go to the local clinic. Anyone can tell you where it is. There are also private doctors and labs if you prefer.

Best thing to do is to use bug spray to stay on the safe side.
