Arenal area rafting

What is the best option for taking a white water rafting trip from the Arenal - La Fortuna area. We are looking for a full day or half day trip that doesn't require a long drive. We have rafted before, but aren't experts. So we are looking for a river with great scenery and probably class III to IV rapids. Thanks.

Rio Torro. Check with the local guides in La Fortuna for a better deal and some great people.

If there has been a lot of rain and the rivers are swollen, Rio Arenal (usually a class II) is a lot of fun -- beautiful scenery. There are about 6 sets of rapids you could class as a III.

If water is at a more "normal" level, Rio Torro is the way to go. More consistently a Class III/Class IV throughout and easily manageable if you have little or no experience.

We used DesAfio Rafting, 1 block up from the Catholic Church in the centre of La Fortuna. Absolute excellent guides and highly recommended.

Thanks for the input. Any need to book ahead of time, or is it best to just arrange a trip once we get there. We are going in September.

Ours was pre-arranged, however, there were six people that just walked in the front door and joined our 1/2 day trip down the Arenal.

Fabulous people. Was one of the best memories of Costa Rica.

I wouldn't worry about booking ahead in Sept. That is the "green season" after all : )

Things will be a lot slower, and that goes for hotels as well. You really can drop into a town that time of year and get better deals than booking ahead.

Do you have any post trip recommendations for rafting in the Arenal area? We'll be these next week and are after a class III to IV trip as well.
