Playa Grande - safe for swimming?

I hear about all the great surfing, but is the beach safe for young children to swim. We will have an 8 year old with us and want to make sure it is safe for him to swim.

The best is once you are there ask for locations that are safe...the beach as the name said is BIG...GRANDE... some spots safer than others...but please common sense and keep a close eye on your kid 100% of the time...some big waves around...

I think with Playa Grande it is a day to day thing. Some days it was fairly calm and you could stand in the water no problem. Other days it was a struggle for a grown adult. This was on the stretch that is closer to Tamarindo.

Grande is a great surf beach....so figure waves, rip tide, etc. How strong a swimmer in the ocean?? is your 8 year old? It is 3 miles of beach, so there are choices......next "door" at Pirates bay is an enclosed bay that is great swimming and snorkeling..
