Playa Grande or Playa Flamingo for six nights in October?

Our family of six (4 adult kids) are planning on renting a home in either Playa Grande or Playa Flamingo this October. We don't surf, but enjoy body boarding and plan to go on adventures most days & hanging out at the beach the other days. We understand Tamarindo is too touristy, but in this very low season, is it the only activity around? We would like a "base" that we could walk to restaurants & bars if we didn't want to cook and not too far from adventures - catamaran tours, Palo Verde tour, zip line, etc. Would Flamingo or Playa Grande be a better location?

Thanks for any help you can give us!

Playa Grande would probably get you a house closer to the beach, and it's close to Tamarindo which has a lot going for it.

There's not much in the way of bars or restaurants, that you can walk to in Playa Grande, but it is very quiet and the beach is beautiful there. If you have a rental car, you could easily get to nearby communities (Brasilito, Flamingo, Huacas, Tamarindo) for some choice in restaurants. October is a very quiet month and some will be closed, however. Playa Flamingo is more developed and would have more choices of restaurants, but only some would be within walking distance depending on your location. Either Playa Grande or Flamingo would give you easy access to surrrounding activities. You may want to reconsider Tamarindo as an option; a large 3 or 4 bedroom condo in central Tamarindo such as at the Diria or Sunrise would give you a convenient base camp for all the activities you are looking for and there are many restaurants within walking distance. Rental rates are cheap in October and you would have the place almost to yourselves.

Depends what your looking for. If you want a laid back small surfing community I would recommend Grande. There are a few hotels in town and alot of private properties you can rent close to the beach(vrbo.com). There are a few good restaurants to choose from and the locals are super friendly. Flamingo is more developed, which does give you those conveniences of several restaurants/shopping etc. I personally would recommend Grande and if you have a itch to go to a larger town, Tamarindo is a short water taxi away (just across the Estuary)

We stayed a week at both in December and both are unique in their own way. The Palms in Flamingo has a great beach for swimming and body boarding. The beach is private, but was just what we wanted. Flamingo has small shops, a store and restaurants about a 5-10 minute taxi ride away. There is coco loco right on the beach if you didn't want to drive anywhere. Playa Grande is a 3 mile long beach with body boarding and surfing. It is a much more remote location because of the building restrictions concerning oceanfront development. All structures are built back from the beach a couple hundred yards because of the turtle hatchings. We stayed in Palm Beach Estates and rented a beach house that was isolated and quiet. The beach was almost abandoned everyday and had lots of shells. The tide and waves are much stronger here. There are restaurants and bars to walk to from any property in Palm Beach Estates (maybe 10 minutes on a dirt road). We enjoyed Flamingo more than Grande not because our house was burglarized, but because it was more of what we wanted in Costa Rica.
