Well not really needed but your advantage would be that you can come and go as you please. If you rent a car please make sure they include the mandatory daily insurance on the rate to avoid surprises when you pick up the car. Some companies give you a cheap rate for the rental and then later you find out the insurance was very high. Some companies are adobe, avis, hertz

CONDOVAC is a little far from places...of course if you like to walk on the beach you can even get to some restaurant...Luperon Gorcery store is there also in Playa Hermosa...it is always nice to have that freedom...but also not nice to have the car at the parking lot all day...

Maybe just to go between places...but really in your case I think you can do it without it!

Hi Gitte D

There are buses that travel the roads between Coco and nearby beaches, but they are often crowded and uncomfortable. ( copy paste)

Most locals travel between beaches by bus...it can be slow nd hot...incredible affordable...

Taxis can be a good option...in short distances it will not be that much...

A taxi would be a good option between Playa Hermosa and Playas del Coco, for instance, where you will find more things to do and more restaurant choices. These two towns are close - maybe 10-15 minutes apart.

I don't think you need a car either.

You could take the bus for longer trips or just to explore the coast. They may be hot and crowded but this is how most Costa Ricans get around so it's also a cultural immersion of sorts. For schedule information -- www.thebusschedule.com/cr/ You will pay the driver in colones.

We are a family of 2 adults and 3 children aged 15 to 10. We are in Costa Rica for 2.5 weeks and are considering renting a car. Vamos looks like the best quote so far. Anyone had any experience with them? thanks

OP, if you are someone prone to making last minute decisions, then a car would make sense as you could pick up in the morning and make a day trip perhaps with some others you met at the resort. Trying to rent a car after you arrive might limit options and become more expensive. On the other hand, if your plans are to "chill" at the lodge/resort/spa and just drink in the Costa Rican wildlife and plants, the you will regret the sheet metal sitting in the lot.

Hope this helps, and have a great and safe holiday.

GitteD: The public buses in that area are not air conditioned so could be hot. Maybe crowded..... maybe not. It just depends.

The public buses don't go from "resort to resort" but from town to town. If you wanted to go somewhere other than the center of town, you could get a taxi. There are always taxis waiting at bus stops and bus stations.

The prices vary but I would imagine you are looking at $3 or less from one beach town to the nearest beach town. You would pay the driver in colones.

You can also ask around once you arrive and local people will make recommendations to you about the bus - where to get it, the price, how long it takes, where it will let you off in the next town, etc. There really is no "coastal road" in most areas. Take a look at a map and you can see this. The road along the coast goes from coast, inland and back out again, in general.
