Phone calls to and from the states

Hello! Can anyone tell me what the cheapest way is to make phone calls to and from the states? Are there phone cards and how much are they per minute? Also - if you have a cell phone - are you charged for calls to the phone from the states in Costa Rica?

Hi Butterfly,

The cheapest way to make calls to the US would be using Skype or some other VOIP. You would need a computer or a Smartphone with the application. You can use internet cafes. From the states to CR - the price would depend on the caller's plan.

Yes there are cards. The ICE phone cards that are availlble at pharmacies shops and many locations charge abit less than 30 cents a minute to the US.

Re cell phone calls: If you have an unlocked phone and buy a local SIM card, the cost to the US is a bit less than 30 cents a minute. And for incoming calls the person receiving the call does not pay. The caller in the US pays according to his plan.

If you have a cell phone and are using your home carrier's roaming the cost will be a lot more. You would have to check with your cell phone company. Some do have International plans - but it would still be a lot more expensive than using a local SIM.

Agree with what raquel-z said. With your ipad you can connect via WiFi through Skype. Most restaurants and bars in Samara have free WiFi.
