Is a rental car needed in Samara?

We're flying into Liberia late in the evening. We were planning on private transport to our hotel in Samara so we didn't have to deal with unknown road conditions late at night. We'll be in Samara for 5 days (split between 2 hotels) and we'd like to do a lot of activities - beach, zip lines, hikes, wildlife, horseback, etc. Is CR the type of place that you need a car? Or is it possible to get around reasonably ($$) via taxi, shuttle, scooters? I checked out Alamo and it looks like a 5 day rental would be around $415 all in. Seems a bit expensive. Any insight would be greatly appreciated! Thanks so much!

Samara is tiny - you'll have no problem walking most of it. That said, if you want to go further afield, it can be a bit more tricky.

While the bus to nearby Carrillo is easy, inexpensive, quick, and frequent, trips to, say, Nosara (and anything in between) would be a bit more tricky.

Not to despair, though. There are taxis to be had and bikes to be rented.

If you want to go a little farther, rent a car for that day! Alamo is in town and you can make a reservation on the web site: alamocostarica.com

Just make sure you make the reservation at least on the day before you want the car.

Renting a car only for the days that you actually need it will certainly cut down on cost tremendously.

Costa Rica is a country where you would need a car, generally. But Samara is one of those small towns you will not need one. If going for an outdoor activity a tour operator will provide the transport. If you really want to drive around for a day, do as per framptonian advice. Just DO NOT rent a scooter.

No need for a rental car if you are staying in Samara. Any tours will include pick up and drop off at your hotel.

Have fun!

REally you do not need a car...you can walk almost anywhere...try to deal directly with tour service providers...you do not need any middle company or person...most of the time just looking for your commisions...deal direct and ask for discounts!

Hi Roadadvisor,

Not all middle companies work that way. Some really do care about offering the tourist the best experience possible regardless of commissions :)
