I am flying into Liberia and driving to Samara in June, How are the roads? Any suggestions on best car rentals?
Roads are fine. Paved all the way and in good condition.
Recommended car rentals include: Alamo, Adobe, Solid, Service, Vamos, Toyota and National.
Yup, good roads all the way. Nothing to worry about. Signs to Samara are plentiful as well - just make sure you stay on the main road through Nicoya.
Nicoya is the only important junction and it is on the same road that you will leave the Liberia airport on. As said, just follow the signs through town. The roads are paved all the way. A sub-compact car will handle them just fine. There is no need to rent a 4x 4. Make sure you understand what your rental quote includes. There is basic mandatory insurance that is required on all rentals. It runs $10 to $20 a day depending on the vehicle and company and is in addition to anything your credit card might cover.
Samara is a pleasant beach in a safe, but not overly developed area. We really liked the next beach south at a place called Carillo.
Alamo is the only rental agency with office in Samara so that may be something to consider if you in case you need any support.
You may want to check out taking a transfer van or local bus out there and renting a vehicle as needed. We used the local bus and it was fine (cleans & safe), I think it took about 3 hours from Liberia ... not everyone's cup of tea though.
Coming down from Liberia, you will turn right into Nicoya. No turns in town, stay straight all the way through. As you exit Nicoya town, you will cross a small bridge, pass a police station on the left and a University on the right. A bit further along you'll pass a large melon plantation on the right. The only turn on this road is at Camiatal. Turn right at the stop sign and continue on to Samara, just be careful of the one lane bridges and yield when the "CEDA" sign is on your side, or better yet yield no matter what.
