Grocery and/or Liquor stores in or near Tamarindo

We are planning our wedding in Tamarindo in April. We will be renting a large house and anticipate having a lot of friends/family hang out and stay there.

Therefore, we want to stock the house with a plethora of food and liquor. Is there a cheap Costco style grocery or liquor store in or near Tamarindo?

Give or take, how much does a case of beer cost? How much does a handle of decent liquor (i.e. rum, vodka) cost? How much does food cost compared to a US grocery store?

Any info or advice is appreciated. Thanks.

You will not have any problems finding groceries or liquour stores in Tamarindo, there are several right in town. They should be a little less expensive than in the USA.

There are several really good grocery stores in Tamarindo. As for prices, you will find some things cheaper and some things more. Imported "American" items and "fancy" items will definitely be more. Fresh fruits and vegetables will be less - and really great.

Many people in Costa Rica shop for fruits and vegetables and meats away from the grocery store. There are still butcher shops (carneceria) and produce stands! Also good bakeries.

AUTO MERCADO in Tamarindo...hard to find somenthing as good as they are...

Buy some wine or liquors at Duty Free every person can buy up to 10 bottles...that is a good deal...

I'm here right now...expect normal USA prices. If you buy local things...they are a bit cheaper. When buying beer...the price listed is per beer...not per 6 pack! We saw 2 hamburger patties for 25,000 colones in the grocery store. "gormet" lol.

If you're going to stock up, then the basics are best purchased outside of town at the MegaSuper in Villareal (4 kms) outside of town. But, MegaSuper will not carry a whole lot in the way of imported products so if you want 'brand name' Lays Potato Chips, and imported cheeses etc. then you're better off to go the AutoMercado on the edge of Tamarindo. The Automercado could be a one stop shop but you will pay a little more at that chain.

Thanks for the tips.

Since we are trying to plan our budget, give or take, how much does it cost per beer (domestic Imperial or Pilsen is fine) at the said grocery stores? How much is a handle of decent rum or vodka?

Beer is generally sold individually, not in packs. Each bottle of domestic (Pilsen/Imperial) is about $1.25-$1.50. We found it a little more economical to buy the big bottles at Auto Mercado. They look to be a little less than a 40oz bottle.

We bought liquor at duty free at the airport. I think prices at Automercado are equivalent to what you'd pay in the US.

Maybe you can supermarket shop before you get to Tamarindo. Tamarindo tends to be a little more expensive. Are you driving to Tamarindo?
