I think that you will have difficulty cashing traveller's checks in Costa Rica, except perhaps in banks. I generally bring some US Dollars and pick up some colones/ more USD as needed at an ATM, as many dispense both currencies.

It's very difficult to cash or use traveler's checks anywhere in Costa Rica. A few hotels and banks accept them - but not many. Even banks are reluctant to cash them.

Good advice from McDoc -- bring some cash, your credit/debit card(s) and then get cash as needed - either US dollars or Costa Rican colones - from one of the many ATM's.

Nobody wants them. The banks are soooo picky and it takes something like 30-45 days to clear. Travellers cheques are old school. Use the ATMs.

I always think of Traveller's Checks as akin to bringing stone tablets when every body else brings a Kindle.

Their time has come and gone.
