Stopping overnight en route from San Jose Airport to Cahuita

Our group of 4 adults and two 13-year old kids (2nd time in Costa Rica) is apprhensive about the 4-5 hour bus ride to Cahuita/Puerto Viejo. Is there a way to break it up half way and stay the night somewhere interesting? Two kids on a bus for 5 hours is no fun.....

Basically - no. There are very few places to stay along Rte 32 and most are back off the road a few kilometers. You'd have to figure out how to get from the bus stop to the lodging by taxi and back again the next morning to wait by the side of the road for the next bus. Far better to just endure the 5 hours.

If the budget allows this might be a good time to hire a private driver with van for the drive. You could make arrangements with him to stop for breakfast en route so the kids can have a break or stop for lunch at Playa Bonita just north of Limon.

No need to stop anywhere, it a nice trip and everyone will enjoy it. There is a pit stop in Limon, about 21/2 hour into the trip to stretch out, go to bathroom, and get something quick to eat.

At 13 years old, i would imagine that your kids would get a kick out of the journey as there is so much to look at. I do it with 3 kids of 3, 5 and 10 with a stockpile of snacks and eye-spy, it really is fine. You'll drive through the Braulio Carrillo NP where the mountains are as far as the eye can see and covered in thick forest, waterfalls are at the roadside and you pass over wide rivers. Once at sea level, look out for pineapple and banana plantations and cows in the fields. From a distance you'll glimpse the railways bridges of the disused line to San Jose. It really is far from a boring journey.

Also try to get a seat on the left side of the bus if possible, you'll get the best ocean views on the way to Cahuita.

Good tip, Cubanon! I always try to sit on the side where the sun isn't.
