Best hotel/flight deal to Carribean coast Costa Rica

Any suggestions to best/safest hotel closest to Sloth Sanctuary and as many National Parks as possible, I'm on a budget.? Would like to be near to a beach. Travelling solo.

Expedia seems to be only agent.

OR , should I book to other coastline instead and do day trips to wildlife sanctuaries? Don't want to hire a car. Possibly one week . THX.

1. Book a flight into SJO. You can book with Expedia or just book directly with the airline.

2. Look for lodging here www.puertoviejosatellite.com

The Sloth Sanctuary is near Cahuita so that would be your best bet for lodging near them. They also have limited accommodations so you could see about that, too.

There are not a lot of National Parks near Cahuita -- the Cahuita National Park is one and the Gandoca Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge is another.

What you might do is split up your trip and spend part of your week at an mountain/volcano location and part of your week on the Caribbean coast.

For the mountain/volcano location, there are a number of options, depending on your interests. The Arenal area is very popular and has a lot of things to do but there's also the Sarapiqui area as well as Turrialba. If you are interested in some serious birding, a bit further south is San Gerardo de Dota.

The sloth sanctuary is 20 minutes north of Cahuita and there are lots of inexpensive lodging options in this little beach town. Check out http://www.cahuita.cr/ for more info. The entrance to Cahuita National Park with its golden beach and extensive wildlife is right in the center of town. You should also check out the Jaguar Rescue Sanctuary south of Puerto Viejo, the next town south of Cahuita which has sloths and extensive wildlife onsite with guided tours twice daily. Gandoca Manzanillo Reserve, south of Puerto Viejo has extensive rainforest and wildlife you can explore on a guided hike south of Manzanillo.

Be sure and read reviews on this site of Aviarios del Caribe, the sloth sanctuary near Cahuita before your trip. It is overrun by cruise ship visitors on days when there are ships in port in Limon. Their accommodations were lovely but they only serve breakfast onsite so if you don't have a car, staying here can be difficult requiring an expensive cab ride for dinner.

And forget about Expedia to find hotel deals. Most of the lodging options are small inns and it is rare to find delas with online international booking engines. Better to contact hotels throguh their websites or used a Costa Rica based agency for booking like Gecko Trails Adventures which is based on the south Caribbean coast.

Stay a few days around Chahuita and maybe move down for a few more to Punta Uva..beach is beautiful down there. There is also the Jaguar Centre you could visit. I stayed at a place called Pachamama in Punta Uva and although you are not far off the road you felt like you were in your own little jungle. Lots of wildlife passes through. Reasonable price. Free bikes to explore. Puerto Viejo not far also.

You could ride down to Manzanillo from there or the walk is amazing. Never saw such beautiful trees in my life as I did the walk from Punta Uva to Manzanillo. You could also do the walk on the beach.
