Hi. I'm getting ready to book a trip to the area and I can't wait! We're really excited to experience the Caribbean side of CR. Last summer we traveled to La Fortuna for 3 nights and then spent 7 nights in Mal Pais. We're excited to see a whole new side to Costa Rica.
We have a VERY early flight out of SJ (6 a.m.), so we will have to spend one night in the area. However, I'm wondering if we should just spend that one night and enjoy all of our time at Korrigan Lodge (where I'm planning on booking) or go one day early and try to tour some place in that area. If we did tour anything it would probably be Paos Volcano and/or La Paz Waterfalls. Does anyone have any opinions about either of these places? Paos looks really beautiful to me, but I'm wondering if it's worth missing a day on the Caribbean side?! And I love waterfalls, but all of the fees for La Paz seem super expensive for me. We loved La Fortuna Waterfall Park, but that was much cheaper in comparison - like maybe $30 for the three of us. We also went to Montezuma Waterfalls and hiked those on our own. It was free, aside from the $2 we paid to park our quad in this guy's lot. I love waterfalls, but to spend $180 to go to a waterfall park seems absurd to me. $90 admission for the three of us plus $90 "tour guide/driver". Paos would be$123 ($28 admission plus $95 tour guide/driver). That also seems like a lot. We will NOT have a car (hence the guide/driver).
I'm also wondering if anyone has opinions on any of these hotels that are close to the airport and offer shuttle service? The ones we were considering for a night or two were: Hotel Buena Vista, Hotel Aeropuerto, Orquideas Inn, or Adventure Inn. I've read many of the reviews on TA for these places and they all sound good - for our purpose.
