Just for the record, it is a dengue fever. Where there are mosquitoes there is always chance to catch dengue fever. This year the risk is higher the usual in Costa Rica. This is what Public Health Agency of Canada has to report about dengue fever: phac-aspc.gc.ca/tmp-pmv/… and this is a link to WHO: http://apps.who.int/ithmap/ .

To be on a safe side, use repellent as often as possible, sleep under mosquito net, wear long pants and long sleeves at dusk and dawn times.

Dengue fever has been on a high in the whole of Central America this year. Costa Rica has had campaigns to educate people and to spray areas at risk but as Xelas points out, taking precautions is your best bet. Dengue mosquitoes bite in the daylight but are usually in the shadows, so keep your eyes open and your repellant on. The mosquitoes are very distinctive with 'zebra' stripes and don't whine like the usual ones.

The general "traveller buzz" is that Dengue is most prominent right now in north- and central-western Nicaragua and making its way quickly down.

Every "friend of a friend" has known someone....

But the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica has been on alert for at least 8 weeks.

My two cents. I have been eaten alive in both countries for three months, still no symptoms....

Bring some good repellent ...In Nicaragua a lot more cases of dengue than Costa Rica...but as most Communist Socialist country they never mention how bad the health is ...of course according to the Communist goverment of Nicargua they have only about 50 cases of dengue...OF COURSE!
