Tortuguero weather (rainfall) in December?

We have a trip planned to Turtle Beach Lodge during Christmas this year, but I'm a little concerned about the 17.56 inches of average rainfall in Tortuguero in December. Has anyone visited Tortuguero during this time in prior years? Do you think it's worth it to visit Tortuguero during this time given the rain and the fact that it's not turtle nesting season? We will be in Costa Rica for 2 weeks and are trying to choose amongst visiting Drake's Bay, Manuel Antonio NP, Arenal Volcano NP, Tortuguero and Tamarindo. We will be flying Nature Air to cut down on travel time and think we can visit 4 out of those 5 areas.

We are also planning tortuguero in December 2010. I would also like to know more in regards to citymonkeyla question. We are trying to decide whether to bypass tortuguero all together. Is there a place in the guanacaste area that is similar to tortuguero, that we could venture to. Wanting to see the wildlife. We will be in tamarindo.

thanks,

rachel

You are definitely going to Tortuguero during one of the rainiest times of the year, so that is really going to be a personal choice for you. Sometimes, when spending a week somewhere you will still have plenty of sunshine. If you are taking a 2 day trip somewhere you will just have to cross your finger and hope for the best! Often the rain won't start until a little later in the afternoon, that's why the canal tours are always scheduled for the morning. You may still see plenty of wildlife during this time, just be prepared for rain.

We've been to Tortuguero during July, which is another rainy time for them. We had pouring rain for a good portion of our time there, but it did break enough for us to do a canal tour which we loved and to hike out to see the turtles. If you think you'll ever go back to CR, I might save Tortuguero for turtle nesting season. That was really amazing. If you go, you do have to be prepared for lots of rain, but you could get lucky. We pack books and a DVD player with movies as a backup plan. Despite the rain, Tortuguero was one of our favorite areas.

Hi,

we were in Tortuguero in December and had one morning of rain for 2 hours and then pure and amazing sunshine. It was sooooooooooo great! You just never know what you're going to get:)

Hope this helps,

Is it better/cheaper to get a package to Tortuguero or go there on your own via shuttle from San Jose & book canal tour from there? I'll only be staying 1 night & it's during high season (end of Dec) Thanks.

Even during a wet day Tortuguero is a nice place...you have good chances to experience a rainy Caribbean day or night during the month of December...
