from bocas del toro to Costa Rica and then visit Tortuguero

Hi, i heard you can take a ferry (or bus?) to Costa Rica from Bocas/Panama. We want to go to CR for 4 days, staying somewhere from where we can do a tour to Tortuguero. We cannot fly from Bocas to San Jose so we need other transportation. Where to stay, where to book trips (and day trip or a booked tour for 3 days?). It's pretty hard to find, do you have any suggestions?

You can take a bota and the a bus into Puerto Viejo...then drive to Limon...and take a boat to Tortuguero...

Just be carefull about some people recommending there own transport services...just ask once in Bocas how to get to Puerto Viejo de Limon...Costa Rica..

You'll want to stay in the Puerto Viejo area....you can take the shuttle transfer over to Bocas and back from there. Its a combo of a land transfer and then a ferry over to the islands, but they drop you off in Bocas town and you'll need to take a cab to get over to the hotel (although depending on the resort, some of them include transfers from Bocas town or the local airport). Its definitely way less expensive than the nature air flights. You can also just do a one day trip to Bocas area as well as arrange 1 day excursions to see Tortugero. Are you planning to do a couple of nights in Bocas or just want to see the area on a day trip? Its a lot to cram into 4 days and keep in mind you're about 4- 4.5 hrs from the SJO airport.

For operators, check out Gecko Trail - they can set all this stuff up for you and they're a good local operator based in the region. Willies Tours also does the one day Tortugero tour and excursions to Bocas. www.puertoviejosatellite.com is a good resource for the area.

You've got good advice there. Maybe as you are short of time, you should consider flying into Bocas from San Jose or flying from Tortuguero back to SJ or even both! NatureAir flights are quite reasonably priced.

we want to stay a few days in bocas and about 3 days in CR, and then back to Panama. When flying, we are thinking of flying to San Jose, do the tour and then? fly back to bocas or by boat (thanks for the tips, any idea on how long it will take?). Or fly to bocas, and then by boat/bus to Tortuguero or Puerto Viejo and then book a 2 or 3 day tour. Thanks for the links, will check 'm out! It's just difficult to find how and where to take a boat, when they go, what the cost are etc. so your tips are very helpful! Thanks

just contacted Gecko and found the shuttle bus (does it take about 2 hours to Puerto Viejo?). This is what I was looking for, thanks!

If you're originating your trip and anding your trip in Bocas (which is what I read here), you're better off doing the shuttle (aprox 2, 2.5 hrs depending on the border crossing time, etc) and staying in Puerto Viejo for the 3nts and then doing a day trip to Tortugero to see the canals etc.

This is going to be way easier and less expensive than routing through SJO from Bocas, UNLESS you have to get back to Panama City, in which case I'd drive back to SJO from Puerto Viejo and look at a Taca or Copa flight from SJO to PTY direct. If you're headed back to Bocas for a couple more days, just take the shuttle back and fly to PTY from there. The Nature Air flights are convenient but not if you want to hang out on the southern Caribbean coast.

You're welcome Anouk.S. Hope you have a FABULOUS time in one of my favorite areas!!! Say hi to the sloths. They're all over the place there.

Gecko Trail by the way also has a GREAT combo tour which includes the Jaguar Rescue Center, Chocolate making and a waterfall. Its a really good deal and gives you a great taste of the Caribbean coastal culture and wildlife.
