Tortuguero - Where to stay?

Hi everyone,

We are visiting costa rica (and north Panama) for two weeks starting from 7th of April to 21st of April this year.

First night (after landing at SJO) we are planning on staying near Poas and then having a full day there. We are renting a car for the whole period of our trip in Costa Rica.

Then we want to visit Tortuguero (one day probably?). As we understand there are two ways of getting there, from La Pavona and from Limon.

Where would your recommend to spend the night? Options are Limon, Cariari and Tortuguero. Baring in mind that we are with a car and that it is April (not the best time as we understand, to visit this area).

Thanks in advance!

The second approach is via Moin, actually. But that one includes a really long boat ride, about 3 hrs, so the one via La Pavona is much better. You should arrive early enough from Poas area to be able to catch the boat from La Pavona to Tortuguero, and thus sleeping in Tortuguero. You do not want to sleep in Limon, and as far as Cariari, bare in mind that this one is really small, with only a couple of only average lodgings. For driving instructions and lodgings look at www.tortuguerovillage.com .

Where you decide to stay may depend on your budget. After conducting research, we decided to stay at Mawamba Lodge in January 2014 for 2 nights. At La Pavona, the Mawamba boat transported a group of us on a one hour picturesque ride through the canals to the Lodge. Of all the different lodges in the area, we selected Mawamba because it was on the “island” bordered on one side by the canal and the other side by the Caribbean Sea as well as it is a short walk into Tortuguero village. We decided to take an early morning (600 hours) canal tour with Casa Marbella (located in the village) as they have a smaller boat that sits six people and has a quiet electric motor. Our guide, Roberto, did a great job of locating Keel Billed Toucans, a Green Parrot, Herons, Piano Birds, White Faced and Howler Monkeys, Caiman and young crocodile. Mawamba has a very nice pool area, the food was good and we saw Iguanas, a Jesus Christ lizard and Blue Morpho butterflies on the property. The manager welcomed everyone to the lodge when we arrived and waved good bye as we left which was a classy act. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Mawamba Lodge and Tortuguero. One night here would not have been enough and 2 nights was ideal.

Thanks a lot for the replies. So both of you recommend leaving the car at La Pavona for few days and staying at one of the lodges in Tortuguero itself.

Is it safe to leave the car at La Pavona? Do they have some organized parking lots?

Thanks again

By far the best price/quality combination and the dock alone is worth the price! Be sure to go on their canal tour.

Yes ... there's a secure parking lot there for $10/night. We'll be driving to La Pavona for a 2 night stay at Tortuguero later this month. Be sure to read through the link that xelas provided above, in particular this info: http://www.tortuguerovillage.com/driving.htm

p.s. SnorkelBermuda ... the link you posted didn't work ... I think you meant to post this one: http://casamarbella.tripod.com/

7. Re: Tortuguero - Where to stay?

Thanks. Still we would have to find a spot to crash after the day at Poas since as we understand, the last boats from La Pavona leave quite early and we will not manage to get there on the same day we visit Poas.

Where would you recommend spending a night after the day (or half of it) at Poas, so we can wake up early and manage to get to La Pavona in time for the boat?

Thanks

There are several lodges in Poas area, like Poas Lodge and Restaurant. Then you can drive little further and stay at Peace Lodge. Great gardens and waterfalls, but expensive, and too artificial lodge IMO. Another option is Sarapiqui. Couple of lodges here, or stay at lovely Posada Andrea Cristina.

The boat we took to Mawamba Lodge left La Pavona around 11:30 am. Initially, we were not with a tour but hooked up with a tour when being transported from La Pavona to Mawamba Lodge. Seems that each of the major lodges have their own boats. As a suggestion, determine where you want to stay in Tortuguero, contact the lodge/hotel and see if they have accommodation available and, if they do, ask how you will get from La Pavona to their lodge/hotel.
