Getting around in Mal Pais

I'm planning on a trip to Mal Pais/Santa Teresa region. I wonder about the proximity of the surf spots? Do I need a rental car? Does anyone rent bikes/scooters with surfboard-racks?

If you're planning on just staying in the Mal Pais area...no need for a car. However, if you want to go to Montezuma or something...I would suggest it. As for the scooters, I pictured myself riding them from Tambor to Montezuma. Ha! I severely underestimated the road conditions; scooters just won't hack it,although I did see lots of people on ATV's and they seemed to be doing fine.

you can walk just about everything - or just rent a bike. There was a new rental place being built, for bikes, scooters, and ATVs, when we were there. Or just hitchhike/cop rides. If you want to surf, just be sure you book a place on the Santa Theresa end, or you'll have a long walk to the beach.
