Costa Rica - to/from airport

My boyfriend goes to Costa Rica and said that it's about 4 hours from the airport to Santa Teresa where he likes to go. He expressed some concern about going as a couple there (safety issues to/from airport?)

Are there any good surfing destinations that are within 1-2 hours of an airport/main city in Central/South America that would be good for an American newbie to travelling in those countries?

Safety issues-to from Airport? no less dangerous than New York...just common sense...a lot of people do that kind of drive daily...some even solo travellers...

Even better as a couple...

Honestly I do not fully understand his point...he comes here often ...but not safe as a couple?? SORRY!!

Not really sure what safety issues he is worried about. I have lived here a long time and have never not felt safe. Not saying nothing happens here but in general IMO the country is safe.

The closest surfing area would be Jaco but I think Mal Pais is a safer area than Jaco as a whole. Jaco is a party town, not a bad place but not everyone's cup of tea either. Good waves there for sure.

You can take a shuttle to Mal Pais (or wherever) or a private transfer. Here is a list.

Thanks. Do you recommend any lodging in particular (some place that is somewhat romantic) in Santa Teresa or Malpais?

Bummer... This place looks cool tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g309273-d568106… never been myself but it gets good reviews here on TA. Go through the hotel reviews for the area and you will find a nice one. More may chime in on this.

You could try Lattitude 10, in the same vicinity like right next to Florblanca or Tango Mar (I love their Tiki Suites) which is about 30 min or so drive from Santa Teresa closer to Montezuma. You could also look at Punta Islita, which while not in Santa Teresa and kind of off by itself, is amazing, romantic and near plenty of good surfing beaches. Its closer to the LIR airport though. If you ditched the Nicoya area becuase of the drive/transfer times, you might try Alma del Pacifico - formerly Xandari by the Sea - individual villas, really unique and only a couple of hours from SJO airport, and easy drive to numerous pacific coast surf spots.

Pranamar is also a nice place north of Santa Teresa.

Like everyone else...I am wondering what kind of safety issues your BF is talking about. Has me very puzzled.

Sounds to me like there is something else....?

If want some great surfing, take a plane from SJO to Puerto Jimenez and surf Backwash, Pan Dulce and Matapalo.

Close drive to SJO, Jaco is absolutely closest. Heading south, Playa Hermosa has a top notch beach break and is often the site of surf competitions

Tulin just south of Hermosa is very similar and much less crowded (although no hotels to speak of, probably stay in Hermosa)

Then you've got Domincal as a major surf destination.

Malpais and Sta Teresa are great! The hotels mentioned are all fabulous. If they're all booked you can try others like Tropico Latino...
