Manuel Antonio is better for wildlife and also hads the great beaches, Carara is good for birdwatching if you are lucky to be there very early. Manuel Antonio is 2 1/2 hours away and Carara is only 1 hour from Puntarenas. It all depends how much of a drive do you want to have. NATUREGUIDE

I agree MA national park is way better, guaranteed wildlife viewing and amazing beaches!

Cararra is a rainforest known for the Macaws that are normally seen early early in the morning.

hope this helps,

Carara does have a few advantages:

1) It feels like an authentic wilderness ecosystem. Manuel Antonio sometimes feels like a zoo because the trails are so wide and the monkeys are so habituated to people. Carara is much wilder and feels like you're on the animals' turf, not the other way around.

2) Carara has much better birds. The birding at Manuel Antonio is mediocre at best--a few herons and maybe a woodpecker is what you can hope for. Carara has trogons, parrots, scarlet macaws in additions to a great variety of aquatic birds.

3) You can see crocodiles and authentic primary rainforest in Carara. Manuel Antonio as a forest doesn't seem all that different from what you'd find in the states--it's mainly a dry/hybrid tropical secondary forest. Carara has the giant ceiba and strangler figs, and also an internal lake where we saw a half-dozen crocodiles as well as a caiman.

Manuel Antonio of course has other advantages, as others have pointed out--more comfortable, more guaranteed sightings of monkeys and sloths.

I like Carara for your situation...closer to the boat...more birds...nice hikes...

Just buckle up and enjoy the ride in PARADISE!

I totally agree with the last post. I love MA park, but Carrara is closer, lots to see and you will not spend an extra 2 hrs driving. Enjoy!
