Where should I stay for 4 nights - stuck on 3 hotels

Hello,

I've posted in the main CR forum, but I haven't had many replies.

I will be coming to CR the 2nd week in May (hope its not too rainy??!?!) and staying in Arenal at Arenal Nayara for 3 nights (Sat-Mon), then taking Nature Air to Quepos and doing 4 nights in Manuel Antonio.

MY husband and I are in our early 30's and have no children. We like to relax during the day at a great beach and pool (I love calm, clear caribbean water, but I know thats not CR), a great pool, and do a half day tour or two once or twice for the week of vacation (hiking, kayaking, rafting, sight seeing, etc.). At night, we like to cocktail and have a band or music to watch/listen to, play pool and have good dinners, maybe some sort of entertainment. Are there casinos anywhere?

Anyway, i'm stuck on these 3 hotels:

Arenas del Mar

Gaia ---there is no beach there, right?

Issimo Suites

Any advice for what you can see by us right now? Thank you!!!

Arenas del Mar is closer to the beach than the other two...

Maybe you have to check also...Buena Vista Villas and Casas and Tulemar Bungalows...sorry I do not want to confuse you anymore...but great place and maybe exactly what you are looking for...

Byblos hotel offer a small casino...

The bungalows are the best...or one villa at Buena Vista...first class act...almost private beach...and you are just minutes from good restaurants and the park..

Check Mot Mot...very popular and most people love it...it is one of the bungalows in Tulemar...

If you like to hang out at the pool, you will not like Issimo, the pool is a postage stamp with little or no ambiance. Gaia has a bizarre pool stacked up on a hillside with limited decking, and this hotel is the furthest from the beach (though they do offer shuttle). Arenas has 2 nice pools, kinda on the small side though and there can be alot of kids, but their access to the beach is by far the best. As mentioned, Tulemar/Buena Vista has a great beach, pool is okay and if you get the right rooms, they are great and you will enjoy it there.

For nightime, Byblos (not far from Tulemar) has a small Casino and usually things like tropical dance night, reggae night, ladies night, music, sports, etc during the week. There are several other restaurants along the main road that offer live music certain nights too. Your hotel should know who and when. Our area is not big on the nightlife, but there are many nice restaurants and you will be tired from the fun tours, so Enjoy!

Hi DeekZee,

As LivNlarge says - the MA does not have a wild and crazy nightlife scene. But pretty well every night you can find some live entertainment at the various restaurants and bars.

Lots of excellent musicians and live music in the Manuel Antonio/Quepos area..

Check Quepolandia - the local monthly free magazine for info. The online version - look at the left side about half way down the page for "Niven's Musical Notes" http://www.quepolandia.com/

Things are constantly changing so ask around when you are there. Usually places that have entertainment will have a sign outside announcing it. Also some hand out flyers in the beach area or in town with info.

Some of our favourites are Kezeira (aka Fuzzy Rojas) She is only in the area from February to October. She is a great jazz and blues singer.

Benjammin is a guitarist. he plays at various locations with different musicians.

Gaia is nice to watch the sunset and have and drink and tapas and listen to live music.

A fun thing is Thinkin and Drinkin - a pub quiz that takes place at Dos Locos in Quepos at 7.00 PM on Thursdays. A lot of local expats participate - but everyone is welcome..

As for dinners - there are lots of restaurants in the area. from upscale like Kapi Kapi to simple sodas like Angel or Soda Sanchez in Quepos - and all sorts in between.. There are many threads about where to eat in the area.

Thank you for the info. I'm not sure that the Tuelmar is for us as its not a real 'hotel'. We can certainly go out every night to dinner if we have to, but we like having bars, etc. on site.

Anyone stay at Arenas del Mar and have opinions on all there is to do there and access to the town?

Do you know if the beach is 'swimmable' or 'snorkalable'? :)

Thank you :)

Tulemar is AWESOME. Beach is fantastic, LOTS of wildlife (up close and personal), the property is gated and felt very safe. Downside, as you mentioned, is there are no real bars or restaurants on site (although there is a cool little beach bar there). However, we didn't find it too inconvenient, as the local restaurants are a very short drive from Tulemar, as well as the grocery store to stock up and cook a meal or two in your villa and of course the casino which was mentioned. Didn't spend any time at the pool, but it looked kinda average.

We stayed at Casa Panorama and thought it was absolutely incredible. Diego and Chris (property managers) act as your personal concierge and will make your dinner reservations, drive you there if you prefer, bring you takeout to your villa, or take you grocery shopping if you prefer that route. Chris is an excellent chef and will even prepare you a meal in your kitchen for a reasonable price. Top notch customer service for sure.

Well I would ask if you looked at Costa Verde II Adults only. Thats where my wife and I stayed (also late 20's and early 30's). Fantastic view from room, breeze and sound of ocean was also so soothing. No AC...but we were there in Mid March and it was hot but we didnt miss AC. The breeze was great. Also big rooms, big balcony, great pool with BAR. Lots of animals.

Another great thing is three popular restaurants in area are owned by them and you can just bill your room. Live music and casino are 2 minute bus ride away. Bus or cab is necessary due to INCLINE and lack of parking. But there is bus stop directly in front.

Check it out....the view they show from the website is exactly what you get.

Loved it. I recommend to everyone...I checked out Tulemar, Byblos (casino), Si Como No, The Falls, Mango Moon, and Issimo while we were in MA last year. I was VERY happy with our choice. I am though very curious of Makanda and there new rooms. Looks great.

Live music is EVERYWHERE! We really enjoyed the band at La Cantina last year on the 7th of March. They were fun. Also watched college Bball at Byblos bar and ate pizza. It is a very fun place. You cant go wrong just stopping at every location. :)
