Honeymoon - split time Manuel Ant. & Arenal?

Undecided about honeymoon (in April)...should we split time between the Arenal Volcano area and Manuel Antonio area? We only have 7 nights - 2 will be in San Jose near the airport (looking at Xandari). Also thinking about Giai reserve in Manuel Antonio. How far are the transfers driving between these areas? We want to relax but also have some activity so I'm thinking for 7 nights maybe we should just pick one area.

Thanks!!

Liberty Travel suggested the following itinerary for my honeymoon:

2 nights Arenal

2 nights Monteverde

3 nights Manuel Antonio

I am doing something similar, but ending on the beach (Playa Hermosa) instead of M.A. I figure I will be all "rain forested" out by then.

I think 2 places will be enough on your honeymoon. We are going for 9 nights and are staying at 4 different hotels! A little crazy, but we're driving through the country (in Nov) and want to see as much as possible.

Here's where we're staying:

1 night Peace Lodge

2 nights Tabacon (Arenal)

2 nights El Establo (Monteverde)

3 nights Grand Papagayo (Playa Hermosa)

We are also flying in to San Jose, but flying out of Liberia...so we don't have the make the drive all the way back.

Arenal to Manuel Antonio will probably be 5 hours +, I would think...

Si Como No is the resort that was recommended to me in MA.

Hope this info helps a bit.

We just got back from Costa Rica and had a great time.

2 nights @ Tabacon Resort in Arenal

2 nights @ El Sapo Dorado in Monteverde

3 nights @ Buena Vista Villas & Casas @ Tulemar in Manuel Antonio

1 night @ Courtyard by Marriott at Escazu near the airport in San Jose.

We used drivers to take us:

San Jose to Arenal

Arenal to Monteverde

Monteverde to Manuel Antonio

Manuel Antonio to San Jose

Just returned from Costa Rica where we spent 10 days in 4 different places: Arenal- 3 nights, Monteverde-1 night, Manuel Antonio-3 nights and Tamarindo-2 nights. Arenal and Monteverde are close but the drive or even if you take the boat across and then ride, it's still 1/2 hour boat ride and 1 1/2 hour drive. The drive from Monteverde to Manuel Antonio is about 4 hours. You have to remember they don't have roads like ours!!!! It's unpaved and potholes everywhere. We were glad that we didn't rent a car but had drivers lined up to take us from one location to the other. We were busy all the time with tours, etc. We were exhausted so last 2 days in Tamarindo were spent just sitting on the beach. However, beach in Manuel Antonio is nice, we did do that one day and part of another day we spent at Si Como No Hotel pool where we stayed. They have separate pools for adults and kids, nice!

There were four of us in our group. We had a private van with a bi-lingual driver. He was able to stop at any locations which we chose.

San Jose - Arenal $140

Arenal - Monteverde - Taxi-Boat-Taxi $120

Monteverde - Manuel Antonio $180

Manuel Antonio - San Jose $140

Clouisep- Our entire trip was booked through Costanica Tours so I don't have an individual breakdown of just the drivers.

A excelent driver that my family and friends have used is Sammy Morun (506)293-9586 or 810-6939. Reliable , speaks english, always drives safe and is reasonable compared to others. fishingjohn

Rich,

How was your stay at Buena Vista Villas? Are there restaurants nearby? We'll be staying there for 4 nights in Dec.

Congrats on your honeymoon! We have been to Costa Rica several times and our favorite area is Manuel Antonio. Great beaches and lots of tour options and great hotels and restaurants. We stayed at Makanda one year, which was nice, but has since developed some security issues, so we haven't returned there. The last visit we spent at the new Gaia Hotel which was amazing! Absolutely top of the line everything, and the staff could not be better in any way. They even give you your own valet during your stay! The restaurant (I can't remember the name) is absolutely over the top. Incredible views with white glove service, all of it without the pompous attitude or the prices that usually go with it. If you go there, take advantage of the free nature reserve tour and free yoga classes, my wife went every day. Also, if you like spas...that's the place, again ...amazing. We have booked for next year already. Another year we stayed at Si Como No in Manuel Antonio, which was a nice place too, but to many kids for our taste. One tour I can highly recommend for everyone is the Mangrove tour. Lot's of monkeys and no hiking. (I have a bad knee.) Enjoy!!
