where to stay

We are heading to costa rica in Feb with 5 small children (8 months, 18 months, 2.5, 4.5, 7.5) We are hoping to spend 10 days in the arenal/monteverde area and 10 days in manuel antonio. Is it reasonable to stay in either la fortuna or santa elena to see both the arenal/monteverde attractions? If so would you reccommend renting a car or are buses fairly reliable? Thanks!

Wow, 4 children under 5 years of age is a handful when traveling, so I'd recommend, if you could afford it, either renting a car, or using a private driver with a van.

In Manuel Antonio, I'd also look at renting a villa, or at least a room with kitchenette.

You can do the travel on public buses. Think big old Bluebirds. Or by shared shuttles: Grayline, Interbus, etc.

La Fortuna is a good base for exploring the Arenal area, and Santa Elena, for Monteverde. Neither is a good base for exploring the other on day trips, as it's 3-4 hours travel time each way between them....
