Arenal & Puntarenas in 3 weeks, needed help with activities

We just booked this package today and we are going in less then 3 weeks, San Jose airport.

- 4 nights Linda Vista del Norte Mountain Lodge, Arenal, Costa Rica

- 2 nights Doubletree Resort by Hilton Central Pacific, Puntarenas/Jaco, Costa Rica

We are a couple in our early 30s and up for anything. What are some of the best activities around those 2 areas that we can do. Also, we have a rental car, so anywhere that's drivable. Any food recommendation as well, we would love to experience the local food.

Do we have to book the excisions ahead? where can we get best price.

Thanks!

I would definitely recommend you to do the ziplines in Arenal, and if you like big sensations, then you should also try the white water rafting on the Rio Pacuare.

Check out Sunset, Jacamar and Desafio for tours in Arenal:

From Puntarenas:

The Tortuga Island tour is good: http://www.calypsocruises.com/

The Waterfall Canopy is one of the best in CR: http://www.finca-daniel.com/

In the Arenal area, we like Sky Trek ziplines, the natural hot springs at Tabacon or Eco Termales, the waterfall hike, the Hanging Bridges hike, and the Cano Negro tour to see wildlife. The Penas Blancas river float is nice too. We've gone rafting with Rios Tropicales and enjoyed that too. It usually takes us about threeish hours to go from SJO to La Fortuna/Arenal. Some restaurants that we like are Don Rufino, La Choza de Laurel, and Soda la Parada (cheap!). If you want fancy and don't mind hotel food, the dinners at Nayara are very good. We've also had some good meals at Eco Termales and the Hanging Bridges. We like Sunset Tours and Desafio that explorin mentioned for tours. If you want local food, go for casados. Batidos are yummy fruit drinks that are worth trying. You'll also see a lot of rice and beans during your trip and Lizano sauce.

Try Los Lagos restaurant across the street from the main entrance of the Doubletree. It's a good restaurant with a "local" ambiance.

One of my fav sites for everything Arenal http://www.arenal.net/ and if you have a chance, take a walk through the "old town" area of Puntarenas and watch the fishing boats unload their catch.
